Subject: Jiriki and Tariki: Effort and Grace


In ancient Japan they had two different philosophies relating to the approach to Awakening, called Jiriki and Tariki. The Jiriki school believed that awakening was the result of personal effort, while the Tariki school believed that it was the result of Grace. They met at times and had a lot of philosophical arguments about it, as things went in those days in Asia. Those philosophical showdowns at high noon.... were very common and part of the fabric of life in those days.

My view on the subject matter is that BOTH schools are right. It is upon the foundation of intense personal effort that grace then brings the flowering, just like a gardener does everything and works diligently for the flower to have a successful growth process, but cannot really directly bring about the flowering...
