Subject: arm inner/outer spiral when under-/overhead

dear all
I am confused about why inner spiraling the arms is different, when the arms are overhead (eg virabadrasana I, adho mukha svanasana), compared with not being overhead (eg badhakonasana) with the arms. It would be very helpful for me, if someone could explain it to me (maybe from the sight of muscular engagement).
Thank you very much for your time!!

Dani - I teach Iyengar, but the alignment is the same in Anusara as far as I know. I am not sure how you are holding your arms in baddhakonasana, but the spiral is the same in almost every pose. You roll your biceps toward your face.

Maybe baddhakonasana is not the best example... Eg in plank I press the index finger knuckle into the sticky mat, turn forearms in (inner spiral), then upper arm out, from inner biceps to outer biceps to triceps (outer spiral).
In Adho mukha svanasana first a external rotation of the upper arm, biceps up to sky. Then rotate forearms inward, inner spiral. Why, or am I wrong...??

They are the same. It is just the up/down thing that is confusing you. Do urdhva hastasana and really exaggerate rolling the upper arms in. Turn your hands in so that the baby fingers are next to each other over your head. Keep the arm rotation and just turn your palms away from you. Keep everything exactly the way it is and step down into down dog. Your arms should be in the right position.

Hello Dani,

Could you please outline your practice? How long have you been practicing, how often, at what duration, and whether this is a studio, home, or studio/home practice?

At that point I'll provide further direction relative to your current level of practice.

Hey Dani
As far as I know (which isn't much!) tourist is right. The inner and outer spirals are the same whether your hands are up or down, the difference is in the order you apply them - in anusara we apply the expanding spiral first, and that changes when your arms are above your head. You have to think of both parameters (inner/outer and expanding/contracting).
