Subject: Soreness in lower back, hip joint area

I have been practicing for just over 2 weeks now almost everyday and have had a sore back the whole time, only after my practice yesterday did it start to hurt enough for me to notice it during the day. Is this normal for someone starting out in yoga. I am 21 and have really tight lower back and hips, with little flexibility in them. Mainly I want to know if it would be best to take a couple of days off until it feels better or keep going because that will help more to work through the pain.

talk to the teacher about the sort of pain that you are feeling. soreness, and working through it (and/or backing off the poses a bit in class), is fine, but pain in the joint or spine is not healthy. identify where the pain is, how severe it is, etc, and then go into practice paying close attention to alignment.

and if you want to take a few days off, then do.

but yes, soreness is normal for most people.

I want to thank everyone that responded and just to update I took 2 days off yoga and then did a very simple set of postures just over an hour long sequence and the pain is almost gone now, I think I just over did it a little for a beginner
