Subject: Eagle Pose

Hi everyone!

I am new to the forums and also new to BY. I am trying to ease my way into it. I am about 80 pounds overweight and wanted to add something to my life to improve my strength and flexibility.

My question is about the Eagle Pose. I can not get my hands anywhere near each other. I am wondering what the cause of this may be? I do have extra fat on me that I know makes some things difficult. COuld this be a factor?

Thanks!

Welcome Sassy. Yep, it could be a factor--so could many other things--it takes practice--you'll hear that a lot--also, add shoulder tightness, general inflexibility. It'll get easier each time. Plus, don't EVEN think about it--raise those arms, swing the right under the left, wrap 'em and bingo. there ya go!

I find it helps if I bend forward and give my arms room to swing freely

Ditto to both! Just keep trying - WHOOSH! - and eventually you will get there.

I've seen PLENTY of skinny people who are too stiff to get their hands together at first. And the big muscle-y body-builders! Oh my gosh, it is practically impossible for them in the beginning. It's totally true that excess body mass can get in your way in some of the postures, but let's face it, as a beginner everything is hard anyways! Once you learn the technique and get stretched out a bit, I think you'll be amazed at how much your body can do.
