I have a new student who told me that she has a hairline crack in her tailbone that can't be fixed and causes her to be unable to sit on the floor without pain. I kept her on her knees and feet during class but talked to her afterward and she indicated that she can sit on the floor if she is on a special pillow (with a hole in the middle). She can do cat/cow (on her knees or standing) with no pain, so she can move her pelvis, she only feels pain if she is sitting and moving her pelvis. Any ideas for how to modify?

was thinking about putting her on a blanket under her hamstrings and backside but keeping her tailbone off the blanket so that it is raised off the mat and has no weight on it. I don't want to put too much strain on her sacrum or lower back however. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Namaste.

can she sit on a chair?
many seated poses can be easily modified with a chair.
twists, forward bends, hip openers...just uh, use the ol' imagination.
if she can't sit on a chair i dunno what.
maybe one of those hemorroid donut cushions...

Seeker - it really depends on the props you have on hand and how comfortable both of you are with experimenting until you get the right set up. I am thinking of combinations of foam blocks or bolster and blankets. You will have to create a space for the tailbone while still fully supporting the sit bones. I know people who have had similar injuries and it is seriously painful! Good luck.

I would advice you to encourage her by telling that she can recover soon from her pains if she manages to perform yoga in any manner by accepting the pains.
