I will dedicate my next practice to him. It will be Second Series, I think.

Guruji has passed away. I'm going to dedicate my practice to him today.

I also just got word of his passing (finally got to check my email). I talked about him with my teen's class today, and took them through their first primary series. then we did an Om circle. it was their last yoga class for the year (summers are really busy for teens--though they are welcome in any class that i teach), and they don't know much about the luminaries, but i dedicated my teaching to him tonight and we dedicated the class to him.

A few studios in my area are recognizing his departure - one will have a ceremony of sorts. I'm surprised, however, at how many of the vinyasa studios are silent on this. The yoga they teach is all derivative of Ashtanga (most often simplified or made less rigid).

I am working to absorb his death -- this man, who I never met, developed a practice of yoga that I have done in one way or another every week for many years. I don't think of myself as an Ashtanga Yogi, but I do ashtanga sequences frequently, and I use movements from ashtanga in essentially all of my practices.

I'm with you Brother Bay Guy--same here in San Antonio--all quiet. I mentioned it to my students last night and it was , "who?" So I tried to explain and got blank staires. Kinda like when an old TV star dies, mention it to a younger generation and they don't know what I'm talking about. I guess his passing will be observed quietly among those who respected him or privately like you're doing.

My practice was sooo awesome on Monday. I lit beeswax candles and held his image in my mind during the entire time. I was mostly doing the Bikram sequence, but it turned into something much greater, with a few extra asanas thrown in here and there. I could actually feel his presence and I swear, he guided me with some asana's and pointed out some really good tips for me. His spirit is incredible!!! I had so much energy after that... it's still lingering too, Anyway, I found it interesting that he died on a Monday, which is Shiva's Day!!!

Yes, I agree, but this makes me feel old...I think that these young folks need to learn more history.

BKS Iyengar practiced in the same style when he was young (see his famous 1938 video - it's Ashtanga 3rd series). But he moved completely away from vinyasa as he got older, both in terms of how to practice and philosophically. The current incarnation of Iyengar yoga eschews sweating. I cannot imagine ashtanga without sweat.

Personally, I like to sweat. As a result, my wife makes me wash my yoga clothes myself.
