OK - the results say we came dead last - in all three divisions. But we had a ton of fun while we were at it! We most certainly met all of our objectives for the first competition. We danced our very best, we handled the pressure VERY well, I was able to see our friends in the audience and smile at them. I also wanted to be sure to not flinch and throw off Mr. Tourist if we came really close to other couples and to recover quickly from any collisions, which we did. I made one little mistake and he made one (this is debatable, he says he didn't have room to do the step and as he is "driving," he gets to make that call) but in general, we danced about as well as we are capable of dancing. Our teacher was happy with the dancing and now we just have to up the performance level. Do you know how hard it is to smile with 12 other couples all on the same floor competing for the same space?

At one point in the first heat I was thinking it was so much fun, I could almost forget there were judges watching us. Then I thought "OMG! I DID forget there were judges watching us!" And I am not used to the whole adrenaline thing at all. I didn't feel nervous in my head, but was a little shaky and sweaty anyway. Coming off the floor after our last event, I saw a friend we haven't seen in a long time (her husband died in the fall ) and I tried to stop and give her a hug and say how nice it was to see her. My hugging instinct worked fine, but my words were completely garbled. In my calm mind I thought "ah yes, the adrenaline is still pumping in there!" When we got back to our room, right away I knew I had to do a headstand and a nice backbend off the side of the bed. It really helped me settle down. My inner Iyengar teacher told me I should do some sort of shoulderstand, but my body knew better in this case.

Anyway, we had friends and acquaintances who did better than us (a big contingent from our club was there) but many of them were so stressed and cranky, there was no way they had as much fun as we did. Yay!!!!

Glenda,
Congratulations! It's especially cool that you can do this together with your husband. Winning is always about how you felt about your performance, not what a bunch of judges thought (unless there is a very large cash prize). If you have not already seen the movie "Strictly Ballroom," you MUST rent or buy the DVD.

We watch Strictly Ballroom on a regular basis, along with both the Japanese and American versions of Shall We Dance? (The Japanese one is better but Richard Gere - well, women understand...)

If they put up and photos of us I'll link it.

Yippee for you two, Tourist. Bstqitmkr is right get those crystals sown on and blind the judges--they must have been blind already to have NOT given you the prize
I'll use this to try to inspire Mr Bellevie (aka, the tin man). You can see my problem

Am I the only one hearing Ballroom Blitz in the back of their head?    Sounds like a wonderful time, glad you guys enjoyed it, you might find it puts you ahead of the 1st place couple.

Ok - here is a photo of us at the competition. If you decide to browse the other images, take a good look at couple #42. They are in about the top 30 in the world amateurs. A MAZE ING!
