I have a recipe for "no cook" protein bars which calls for powdered milk. I don't drink milk, or use much dairy, but can't figure out what I would use instead. Any ideas? I've tried the recipe once already, and ended up with protein "crumbles" instead of bars
Thanks!
Samantha

Hey Sam,

What about plain Soy Protein Powder??? Or you can do Goat Milk powder which is very good...but very intense in flavor. Milk powder doesn't seem to bother me like regular milk does...I think once its turned into powdered form it looses all the stuff - the good and the bad, Good luck with that!

Hi Cyndi,
Thanks for the response. My recipe does also call for protein powder, and I used soy. I just left out the powdered milk altogether, not sure if that's why it turned out crumbly. I'll have to try again, maybe using a bit more protein powder.
Thanks for the advice!

Samantha - can you post the whole recipe? That might give us a better idea of how to adapt it.

Sure Tourist, thanks for the help!
Here it is:
1 and 1/2 cup dry oatmeal
2 scoops chocolate protein powder (it calls for whey, but I used soy)
2 tbsp flax seeds
__ cup powdered milk ( I stupidly hole punched the sheet the recipe is on and punched out the amount before cup!)
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup natural peanut butter
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup raisins
Then you just mix dry ingredients, then water and peanut butter, then mix everything together and spread in 8 in pan, and freeze.

Thanks again!
Samantha

Thanks for posting that link Bruce! I couldn't find the recipe anywhere! It is a lot to leave out. I had been thinking it was 1/4 cup or something. I might try it again with a little more protein powder.

I think I see the problem...Whey is what the recipe requires, not soy. Whey does have a totally different texture and could be why its not working. Whey is milk...right??

Cyndi, I did read somewhere that whey is derived from milk. I didn't think of it, but I guess that could be why it is not turning out right.
Bruce, I just bought almond milk for the first time the other day (not the powdered kind though) I was thinking the same thing as you, but was curious to see how it tasted.

The same way you milk a coconut --Seriously.

Almond flour is frequently used here in France for desserts instead of wheat flour. Almond flour has a tiny bit more flavor than wheat flour but it is very subtle. I would imagine almond milk would taste- in and of itself- very bland, not too appealing unless mixed with sweeteners and flavorings such as in your recipe. I saw a recipe on Google for almond milk that added dates and vanilla for flavor.

I use almond pulp in North Indian recipes. Your protein bars sound delicious and I'm not really a sweets lover, are they very sweet? Bon appetit

They're not too sweet. Very peanut buttery I actually hardly tasted the protein powder at all!
