Is someone who desires breast implants suffering from body dysmorphia or low self esteem? Probably to some degree.

Hogwash

My wife got breast implants last year. She is tall and got pretty nice size ones. she went from A cup to 34DD. She didnt do it to attract other men or do it for me. She did them for herself. I have not noticed any real difference in her behavour or attitude.

good for her...hope it gave her everything she was looking for out of them.

For another take on this, visit a site I found (warning - photo alert): http://www.paulkienitz.net/no-implants.html (40 reasons not to get a boob job).

And for every reason there is to not get implants, there are 10 reasons to get them. It's a personal choice and no one has the right to opine one way or the other on a person's choices regarding their inner and outer sense of beauty and comfort.

Piel, I would be very interested in seeing 400 reasons for getting implants. Please advise, I am genuinely interested.

No one is disputing that it comes down to personal choice. The objective is informed, aware choice, which means giving all sides a hearing.

With regard to your statement that "no one has a right to opine", I find this an odd pronouncement coming from a forum administrator. I understand a 'forum' to literally means an open discussion, and that includes the sharing of information and opinions.

Well each to their own, so I’m going to answer this question on a purely practical level.

I don't have implants but I do have large breasts and it does effect your practice. So it depends on how big you go but in Eagle, getting your arms wrapped around and below your noise is harder. Locust pose is very difficult as getting your arm flat to the floor and transferring your weight to lift your legs is very tricky and quite painful on your boobs. Wind removing pose with both legs takes extra sweezing to compensate for your legs hitting your chest sooner than normal. Half tortoise – well it’s much harder to get a flat spine. Those with small boobs try doing this with 2 bags of sugar between your thighs and chest and you’ll see what I mean ? I’m not sure I can get around my boobs on this posture.

And any posture that involves forehead to knee can have the added complexity of a little boob suffocation but a little wriggle around and it’s not too bad

In summary, it effects your practice but I get by and have done for years. I don’t think it really effects the overall benefits of the practice as a whole but if I could drop a few bra sizes I would.

Hope this is helpful.

Why would anyone logically put two huge benign artificial tumors right smack in front of their chest?

Ummm...maybe because they were made to feel unattractive and un-womanly because they were teased and subjected to unkind remarks for many years about their flat chest? Perhaps you didn't mean your post to be offensive, but as someone who falls into the above category I perceived your comment as extremely patronizing.

I researched this topic greatly prior to my breast aug 4 weeks ago and found very little advice on the topic. So I will tell you everything I know based upon my personal experience.

First of all, I understand and support your decision to have augmentation. It is your decision alone to make. We are not our mind nor are we our body, but we do live in this body for now and if it is important and available to you, go for it. I have practiced yoga 4-5 days a week for 6 years now and continue to be surprised at the fundamental attitudes that some carry with their practice. I was raised in a fundamental church and for me, yoga represents and embodies a physical, emotional and spiritual freedom that I was never able to find in the church. I find it so hard to understand all the rules people want to put upon their practice. It is so similar to the church I was raised in. Whatever happened to non-judgment and compassion? Weird.

jimg, thank you for your considerate and appropriate comments.

But I digress. I was a full C cup my entire life and lost about 15 lbs a couple of years ago due to an illness and lost alot of breast tissue, ending up with a saggy B. I really missed my boobs and after thinking about it for some time (several years) I decided to get implants to feel more like myself again.

I had surgery 4 weeks ago. For 2 weeks, you cannot do anything but walk for exercise. I walked and did seated meditations and healing visualizations and did alot of Reiki to help with the healing process.

At 3 weeks I was allowed to get my heart rate up again and I went to a Bikram class. I normally do a heated power vinyasa flow, I actually never cared for bikram, but I cannot do Down dog or push ups until my 6th week, so I went to Bikram because i was jonesing for the heat and the Zen.

I was able to do all poses comfortably. I did not push my limits and I took it easy, but I didn't have to sit out for anything. The floor poses actually feel nice. My Dr said that laying on the floor on your breasts is as good as massaging them.

And, I have to say that I have come to love and appreciate Bikram for the first time! I plan to integrate it a couple of times a week with my normal classes once I can return to them. This surgery has given me so much in regards to my practice... I have become more in tune with my limits and am not as competitive with myself as I used to be. Not being able to do yoga for 2 weeks gave me such appreciation for all of the movement my body can do once again. I feel amazing and I have my boobies back!

So you make this decision for you. I personally have no qualms about wearing makeup, dying my hair, etc... seems so silly to feel guilt over such things. Life is too short. Live it, love it, and celebrate your freedom!

that's for that info FREE!

i agree with so much of what you and jimg said about the topic--i really so no difference in kind between my nose rings and your augmentation, just a difference in degree (i mean, surgery takes more effort and is more difficult to recover from, but at the end of the day, both of us were choosing what we wanted to look like, and paying someone to do something to our bodies to make that happen. and no, my nose rings do not affect my practice! LOL).

i did get a chance to talk with both gals about their surgeries a bit. both said that recovery was easy for them, and that yoga was fine once the docs gave the go-ahead. with this, they said the same things that i--or any bustier gal--would say (though i don't get choked by my breasts!), and that everything is great.

now, the one who also had lasik said that THAT surgery was much harder to come back form because you can't get your eyes wet for a very long time, and so showers and hot yoga were HARD on her.

so, i think that if you want it, find a *very* good surgeon with a great reputation, do what you need to do, and let the practice follow that doctor's lead (as each person to whom i spoke said their doctors gave them different time frames than even Free above. ).

This is a very interesting discussion b/c my (natural C-D) breasts get in the way during yoga, don't fit right into the current styles and I feel top heavy and self concious. I happen to think that society currently favors a boyish, Cameron Diaz, flat chested shape. Yet, this whole thread seems to indicate the opposite. So... what does that say about perception? desire? acceptance?

As for sexual attractiveness, IMHO, as a married monogamous woman, I just don't think guys are all that picky. It's like jellybeans, they like the red ones as much as the green ones. Again, just my opinion.

P.S. I had LASIK surgery and it was not hard to recover from. It is especially great to do yoga without fussing with contacts or glasses.

Jennifer,

Porn stars, strippers, and other sex workers routinely get breast enhancements to increase their revenue. I guess that means that, among the people who pay for their services, bigger breasts are more sought after. It may, or may not, be a mistake to think that those people represent a fair cross-section of the male population.

But then, take a look at avatars for video game characters. The smallest breast size you will see on a heroine in a video game is probably EEEE. And then of course there is Barbie, who would probably need back surgery by the age of 16 if she existed in real life.

And basically, you are right, guys in general are not particular about what they will take. Just about anything will do. But that doesn't necessarily reflect what they would like if they thought they had a choice. Actually, most single guys, if they had a choice, would like it all...

Again, I just want to stress that having augmentation should be a personal choice and have nothing to do with how you think others will perceive you. I, personally, am happily married and happen to have a husband who understood and supported my desire to have my "old" breasts back. I did not get porn star boobs, I went to many different surgeons to find one who understood my desire to have a very subtle enhancement. The skin was already there, I was just lacking breast tissue. I am now a full c again and I look and feel very natural only 4 weeks out. I look exactly the way I did prior to my weight loss and I feel like myself again. This wasn't about trying to fit an image of how society thinks women should look, this was about me wanting to look and feel the way I used to.

PS- I've also had lasik about 3 years ago and it was the best decision ever! Why not take advantage of the wonderful technology our generation has access to? I no longer need to struggle with contacts and glasses and the day I woke up after surgery and could read the alarm clock.... lets just say it's the closest to a miracle that I have ever been.

free2B, that's a great perspective and I'm glad to learn that you were able to 'retrieve' your sense of self. Your pro-augmentation posting is the very first that I've read presenting that side of the argument that makes any sense to me.

I suspect yours is not the rationale for the majority of women seeking augmentation, but it has altered my thinking on the issue a tiny bit. Thank you.

Chatoyancy, I also experienced teasing for my A-cups in high school; I was even given a nickname related to 'em at one point! I guess I've been fortunate in that I had the self confidence to never let it get to me. My cup size has never defined my self-image & moreover, I've always felt pretty lucky about my shape. What a gift to feel comfortable in one's body! Perhaps I was naturally inclined this way, perhaps I need to thank my beautiful late Mom for instilling my positive self-image, maybe credit dance classes and sports . . . I've also had the good fortune to have nursed my two baby boys and through that experience, came to a fuller and richer understanding of the function of my body as a woman. Wouldn't have traded that experience for anything!

hehehe my friend/student doesn't regret her lasik surgery at all, but compared to her augmentation, she felt that it was harder--from a yoga practice perspective--for her to recover from. this is because her doctor allowed her to pretty much go back to regular yoga classes quickly (starting with heated yin classes, then moving onto more rigorous stuff), but her eye doctor didn't want her to sweat in or around her eyes for a number of weeks. so for her, no heated yoga for several weeks was (emotionally) really hard.

after everything is healed though, she is glad that she had both surgeries!

and i don't need lasik or augmentation, at least at this point, so there's no reason for me to take advantage of either, though i wouldn't rule either one out.
