Legs become numb for almost everyone after one and a half hours. Do you have a teacher?

Hi Newtech - really, nobody should try to learn to meditate without a teacher. It is a "simple" process which is not always the same as "easy." What sort of meditation are you trying to do?

If sitting crosslegged is a problem (most westerners would have discomfort after 15-30 minutes or less, let alone an hour and a half) then do your meditation sitting comfortably. Use a chair or sofa. You will find it impossible to meditate if discomfort is annoying you all the time. Find a comfortable position whatever it may be.

What you are doing wrong is: time beyond 1 hour. Reduce the time.

I agree with Kulkarni, the problem is duration. As a physiotherapist I've treated a lot of backs, and you are describing sensations that may be caused by nerve compression in your back (numb, tingling, pins and needles down your legs?) Be careful, perhaps you could get up midway through, say after half an hour or whenever you start feeling discomfort, and do a couple of minutes of walking meditation.

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum. Have been meditating for about a year, on my own, and am hoping to learn something about meditation from this forum.

Newtech, I would say that you are meditating for too long. I started out with a few minutes/day and am now, after a year, meditationg 40 mins/day. There is no reason to rush!

really, nobody should try to learn to meditate without a teacher. It is a "simple" process which is not always the same as "easy."

It is better to learn to meditate with a teacher to guide you. But in my opinion it is better to learn to meditate solo, if a teacher is hard to find, than not at all. It is absolutley possible. I'm a living fact of that

I have gained inspiration from a book of meditation though, that is very well written!
