Subject: ACL AND SURGERY

I'm 49 yr old and very healthy. Have been living and working on sailing yachts for the last 14 yrs and been practicing Iyengar yoga for 7 years very seriously.  Two weeks ago I was in a motorcycle accident and completely torn my ACL, torn the lateral meniscus and have a complete tear of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus, etc.  I've had the MRI been to one suregon who thinks that being 49 is too old to repair the ACL but wants to go in and clean up the meniscus, stating that repairing the ACL will bring stiffness, which is worse then having a torn ACL. Any comments or anyone with experience knowing someone over 49 (female) who has gone through this.

It sounds so weird, I thought I was just starting to live.

 Namaste

what is your current ability to practice?
are you in proximity to any teacher experienced enough to help you in rehabilitation?
jeez that sounds pretty bad...
i bet you'll still be able to do a lot, just have to start from scratch?

my practice is very limited to upper body, and forward bends with lots of support and lots of awareness using TAPAS. I am in a immobilizer brace and on crutches.
Am able to put a tiny amount of weight on my leg, buy my knee is still swollen and unable to straighten.

There is a senior Iyengar teacher about 40 min away, but I cannot drive as yet.

thanks for getting back.

which teacher is it?
are you able to do any sort of supta padangushtasana?
might be a place to start...
even doing it with the leg supported at the wall and only extended up to 90 degrees...
sounds like you'll just have to wait it out a little bit.
if you've had this practice for so long, though, i bet you'll retain much of your abilities after healing.
best wishes, keep us updated
