Subject: New To Meditation - Side Effects?

Hi all!

I am just under two weeks into meditation practice. My reason for meditation is to help me get over issues of low-confidence, especially when travelling, and low self-esteem. I appreciate that meditation is not a quick fix and am ready for the long haul and to make meditation a daily part of my life.

I read a (now out of print) book called "in stillness conquer fear" about a meditation approach which according to the author freed her from anxiety. The appraoch is simple, just sitting and letting go of tension and letting thoughts pass to promote stillness in mind and in body.

I have been doing this every morning for 10 mins and every eve for about 20 mins. But this last week I have felt spacey, tired, and a slight dull headache and have been waking up too early.

When I meditate I do get the feeling that I go quite deep. Should I do one of the following:

A. Keep going because these symptoms show that change is occurring within me.

B. Cut back, because meditatio is powerful and I should build up my practice slowly.

C. Stop all together.

Or any other advice??

 Many Thanks for reading

T

Hi Thomas,
Why do you think that your "symptoms" have anything to do with your meditating?

Hi!

I just thought that because these feelings seem to have co-insided with starting to meditate, and they don't feel like an illness. Of course I could be wrong, it could be coincidence entirely. My feeling is that it is because of the meditation.

Cheers

I would suggest continuing to meditate and see what happens. If the "symptoms" continue, you can always stop and then see if the "symptoms" also stop. There is no obvious reason how or why meditation as you explain your practice could cause any bodily or mental/emotional dysfunctions. The main "symptom" should be that you are less stressed and more aware.
