The company I work for has just announced that it's shedding 10% of its workforce thanks to the economic melt-down. 350 jobs are to go in the UK, mainly in our Reading (where I am) and Slough offices.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/berkshire/7723208.stm

We won't know who's affected for a while due to the consultation period.

I'm a union rep. for Connect (we're also recognised; the BBC article above only mentions CWU) so even if I don't get affected personally (God willing), I will be helping those that are.

So, if I seem to turn into a complete lunatic over the next few weeks, you'll know why.

That is, assuming I haven't killed a builder first :-(

Thanks. This is potentially the third time I've gone through this in my career. I'm just hoping I'll be as lucky as the last two times.

Ok, talking to Cyndi last night made me realise I'd not updated this post.

I have been "targeted for voluntary redundancy". Due to the sheer numbers involved, this really means have been made redundant as redeployment opportunities are going to be non-existent.

I am probably going to be leaving by the end of March unless I find a new job sooner.

On the positive side, I have paid off my mortgage and am getting about the equivalent of 2.5 years salary in redundancy settlement and monies in lieu of notice.

On the down side, I still have the builders from hell in my home and only one bedroom of 3 in working order..... the plan was to rent one out to cover living expenses were I ever to find myself in the position I'm now in *sighs*.

I've applied for 3 jobs in the last week and am now waiting to hear.

At the moment, it's like working in God's waiting room in the office and at least one 'safe' friend has already told me she's suffering "survivor's guilt" so, on balance, I'm guessing the risk of going v the risk of staying is probably in the leaving's favour.

Thanks for your support guys,

Fiona

Hey Fee, It's not much, but I can say the true builders from hell would have done the demo and deserted you. Keep you chin up girlfriend, things will get better, Shelly

Hey Fee,

I just hope you make sure you have an ISP service and a computer at home before you leave, okay???

Otherwise....we'll be burning up the phone lines from here to the UK. My poor body can't take this ya know. I woke up with a pain in my left eye from too much laughter and Vino, LOL!!

I'm not sure we should allow these private trans-Atlantic phone conversations! Sounds like a party I didn't want to miss!

That would have been preferable to the pile of sh*t they've installed as fitted units in my bedroom which now need an agreed "rectification plan".

My neighbour Karen is helping me sort them out (she's a redundant estate agent (realtor)). We're hoping they'll eventually agree a price reduction on the outstanding invoice and go so I can get someone in who knows one end of a hammer from another.

Thanks for the support though Shelley :-)

Yep, need to sort out private internet access. I'm planning to get my home PC rebuilt as an internet-free work/gaming machine and buy a cheap laptop for wireless net connection.

Glenda, you just so don't want to know the mischief Cyndi and I get up to mid-atlantic *lol*

Mind you, once I get e-nabled at work, I'm going to get SKYPE. This then enables conference calling

Well, I have 3-way calling...ya'll are invited anytime,

It sure would be nice if we had an instant chat...those are also fun...but, not like the real thing...hearing the voices, the interuptions and talking over each other is like nothing else in this world, OMG, especially trying to figure out Fee's British accent, and no doubt she trying to sipher my Mountain slang, heehee

We're skyping up soon, too. Then I can talk free to DD. Long distance is getting a lot cheaper, but free or practically free is better!

I did a little online text chat years ago when I hung out with a bunch of crazy Muppet fans. One night The Count was on! That's my closest brush with fame.

No - he was a really slow typist. Maybe he was counting each key as he typed it.

I don't have too much trouble with your accent, but listening to your sampling all that good food you were cooking was hell *lol*

I've just heard that I have a job interview for that NHS Data Analyst
post on the 21st of January. Need to start digging up some examples for
all those annoying competency based interview questions now!

i like skyping, but my goodness it IS tough to get through a whole conversation with skype. it's how i keep up with my NZ friends (who now all live in the US, Israel, and Europe, go figure). anyway, it's fun to use skype.

back to the topic though, i'm sorry that you're redundant but thank goodness the mortgage is paid off. i hope that the builders quickly take care of things (these or others) so that you can enact your contingency plan. i think it's a good plan, but i also am glad to hear that you got a decent pay-out.

i hope you find a new job soon, as well!
