Today's the day, folks. Be bold, wait in line, do what you need to do!

BTW - there are essentially no line ups to vote in Canada, even in years when we don't have a record low turn out like we just had in the federal election. Another good reason to make a run for the border!

Interesting email I just received...I'm sharing...this is good stuff!!!

My apologies to Virginia Postrel for borrowing the title of her provocative book for the subject heading of this email...and, yes, I know its late in the game...

But I in so many ways I see the historic decision being made today in these stark terms.

Who do wish to support?

A candidate who has dare to express and articulate a vision of hope for the future...a candidate who has, throughout a long and grueling and often ugly campaign, maintained his composure and continued to express that vision in the face of an onslaught of out and out lies and slander...a candidate who has worked hard to build a coalition of support than seeks to include and empower through a rising tide that truly hopes to raise all boats.

Or is it a candidate and party who have chosen to engage in the ugly politics of lies and deception...engaging in the character assassinations that have sadly become a staple of his party's strategy both for campaigning and for ruling our country...a candidate who, as opposed to articulating a vision of inclusiveness and a bringing together of all of the people who make our country great, has actually sought to divide...to question the patriotism and integrity of those who ask questions and who dare to demand honesty and accountability from their government...a man and party who have sought to manipulate and exploit the ignorant and uneducated through deceit and innuendo to form a coalition with those who seem unable to support anything beyond their own most crude and short term self interests.

As a business owner, community leader or a citizen, I ask you:

Whose campaign has been run with the vision, leadership, and skills that you would want to see in your own company or community?

Whose campaign decision making reflects the decision making acumen that you would like to see in your own business or community?

These are the skills and vision that our country need in these challenging times.

This is about the future.

If you haven't already, please vote today! And ask your friends and co-workers to do as well.

I'm pretty political, with a small p, so I do spend a lot of time watching our own elections as well as the US one. It still amazes me the length of time your Presedential election takes... the average Brit's pretty much murderous after 6 weeks of election news on every TV channel, let alone 21 months of it!

The following is an excerpt from the memo I sent to a friend this morning :

"Me too. I was thinking only this morning how his [Obama's] oratory style reminds me so much of the clips I've seen of Kennedy. I saw the highlights [of his acceptance speech] this morning but will catch-up with the whole thing later.

From a global perspective, I think your having a President who wants to put diplomacy firmly ahead of warfare is a BIG relief.

I guess the one concern we have about Obama is that he may go further than removing unfair trade tariffs on American businesses and make a return to protectionist policies as these have a nasty habit of back- firing and slowing economic growth. Regardless of who got in, I think you guys have a lot more pain to go through economically as I don't think 4 years is going to be anywhere near long enough for any policy to turn things around completely. We saw it here in Blair's first term. Though we are suffering from having gorged ourselves on debt, I think we may weather the current downturn fairly well as the ground level confidence is still in place. I just wish we had done what the Spanish did in the 80s and put in place regulation that limited irresponsible lending by the financial institutions.

Any way, I'm now going to climb down off this soap-box and open a virtual bottle of bubbly in honour of your new leader!"

Love,

May I share that bubbly with you Orbilla if I can ever stop crying. Iwas up all night with the six hour difference, so I am tired and numb.

It's two years of emotion that will take some time to sort itself out. I m still in a state of shock-- ecstatic shock, a dream I never dared dream come true.

But now a sip of champagne and down to work, there is a long road ahead.

I bow down to B. Obama, for his victory in this election, as only one in Million can attain such a position.

May god bless him in his tenure.

I'm proud of you, America. Even if Obama turns out to the the worst president ever, and I somehow doubt that will happen, it was about time to do the right thing. Way to go! Now keep up that energy and move into the real work. It is easy to do a few sun salutations while everyone is happy and cheerful and energetic, but you have to dig deep to achieve the 10 minute headstand, the 5th repetition of urdhva dhanurasana, the gut grinding depth of the twists and the humility of the forward bends. You can do it, yes, you can!

Well.... now folks have some irrefutable evidence that a black man can reach the highest levels in our country. I think it's been a fact for a long time, but maybe now we will get beyond all that old tension...

I still wonder whether he will really be able to deal with the economy. He gives a nice speech, and he was clearly a better choice than McCain. (I still miss Hillary...okay?).

The major result of the recent election is the incomprehensible passage of proposition 8 in California. One day, people will look back in horror at the open acceptance of discrimination against gays. **The people of California should hang their heads in shame.** I am disgusted.

It'll bee alright BB, go drink another Guiness, relax and let's have some fun, I personally feel like a big burden has been lifted. Your're right Tourist, my practice just got bumped up on sooo many levels and I like it, alot!!!

Actually, I enjoyed the Clinton years...my business was thriving, I had money...life was pretty good. The last 8 years have really sucked in the financial department...good thing I was focused on my yoga practice and living in the hills. Although....most of us saw it coming when GWB got elected back in 2000 and we planned ahead. Unfortunately, there were those who didn't see it, refused to see it....and they suffered dearly. Then there were those that stayed in denial and have been ever since. What a vicious cycle we've been on.

However, I truly believe that Barack Obama is going to change everything....I mean everything. It's going to be a fun ride. I just love his energy. He is soo peaceful and refreshing!.....he is rock solid.

Yes we can......and YES, WE DID. Yippie!!!

Bruce - I'm no economist and I really don't debate politics, but I truly believe the markets are going to keep flailing about no matter who is in charge. We North Americans have to understand that it is all much bigger than us now. The whole world is in on this game and no longer runs on what is happening minute by minute in the US. The Chinese may not be able to access porn or music from the US, but they are in the money markets big time and in spite of the minor blip historically of the communist years, finance is something they are very, very good at. Frankly, we should probably all be afraid of China much more than any of our individual politicians.

I liked that Obama promised his kids a puppy - small payment for them to live through this whole, LONG campaign .

and yes, let me please reiterate yet again, that Obama's peaceful attitude and his peaceful everything...is soo refreshing. I was ready to pack my bags for Costa Rica if the repulican party had won. I just could not listen to their voices any longer, it was making me literally sick. I think yesterday's vote was a clear message of how we are feeling. I'm proud to be an American again.

The puppy.....I wish I could live in the White House with them....can you imagine how cool that would bee.

and China.....that's a freaky thing to think about, ask the Tibetans, they'll tell ya. For what its worth....the Asian community....the Nepalis, the Tibetans....the Peruvians in South America...just to name a few out of sooo many, supported Obama all the way...amazing.

it is so true, cyndi!

it ws interesting--as i was nursing hawk on another of his marathons (he LOVES these 3-4 hr nursing sessions with burp and potty breaks, then RIGHT BACK ON, LADY! IT'S ME! HAWK!) and i was watching a good deal of news coverage.

anyway, i noticed that we have a lot of wars going on. the war in afghanistan, the war in iraq, the war on terror, the fight or war against cancer, the war on drugs. . . .

interesting that so much of our lives are--at least at the level of language--focused on war.
to use the language of "the secret" (and i noticed Obama did quite a bit--he would say "when i'm in office" more often than "if i'm elected" etc), i wonder if we all turned the language a bit what would happen.

what if the "war on cancer" became the "path to vibrant health!" and the "war on drugs" was the "acting in joyous wellbeing!" and what if the "war on terror" was the "peaceful mind project!"

yeah, seriously, i think having an orator in office is probably one of the greatest things for america. i mean, a man who can write such heart-felt and speak them so well. . .who undrstands the language of positivity. . .

well, there might just be some changes around here!

My sister sent me her high school boyfriend's republican blog, from Colorado. I could not believe it...much less comprehend that this so called Christian could say the things he said. Talk about terrorism...I don't understand how if your're a republican, it's okay to have terrorists thoughts and that much hatred. It's so ridiculous.

Oh well, evil comes in many forms. Like I've said along...they're wolves in sheep's clothing.

BUT, they've been exposed. It doesn't matter now, the world has spoken. It's time to evolve into something much greater. I wish everyone peace, because there is so much work to be done. Obama himself told everybody, "I'm not going to be the perfect president". If everyone would pull together, we have the potential to create an incredible American life. This crap about being a republican and democrat is BS....I voted for the person, not the party. Always remember, UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE WILL SURELY FAIL!!

I totally agree that we need to stop fighting the things that we don't like and start encouraging and working for the things that we actually want. At the same time we must be careful that we don't just start playing with the words (like Reagan's "Peacekeeper" missile) instead a making an actual paradigm shift. Changing the symbol (word) for something does not change the underlying thing that that symbol (word) is a symbol for. Unfortunately, it is easy to get people to come together AGAINST something. It requires real leadership to get people to come together FOR something.

i agree jimg.

but, i have to admit, whenever october comes around, our yoga studio talks about "breast health initiatives" rather than "fighting breast cancer." i don't think that this is playing with words or symbols at all. we're just consciously choosing to work *for* something and not call something else into our lives.

also, in speaking about the new puppy, the girls originally wanted a pure breed, apparently, but obama asserted that a shelter dog would be nice. at one point, he said something like "a mutt like me." and i thought--what a wonderful, peaceful way of teaching about acceptance and diversity.

I saw a TV programme about China's economy last night and how the US and Chinese economies are so thightly linked.....70% of America's assets are in Chinese ownership once you trace back though all those multiple layers of borrowing and shell companies. Chinese people save, on average, 50% of their minute incomes as they are scared to death about falling ill or getting old as there is no state help whatsoever. It's these savings that are paying for all that credit in the USA. Without it, America would be bankrupt several times over - In the last year Americans have spent $1.22 for every $1.00 earned.

I would guess a similar story can be told about many western countries. Until we all re-learn to save more than we spend, we will continue to be vulnerable to the vagueries of the market.
