| It is simply a personal affirmation designed to assist you, usually with respect to personal development rather than acquisition of material things or people.
As you say, examples might include
I will lose weight
I will give up smoking
I will be happier
I will be more content
My Sivananda teacher instructed to repeat it 3 times at the beginning and at the end of yoga nidra.

| Dear Orbilla: What you wrote below is very good. But, that is NOT sankalpa. sankalpa is a kind of Promise that one makes while taking up certain practice in terms of Completion of that Practice. Practice may be having certain desired effect in mind. Without going into Effects, I am giving an example of sankalpa:
- I shall worship Shree Shiva with one Million Rose Flowers.
- I shall feed 1000 Yoga students.
- I shall donate 1/10 of my income to charity without letting anyone where I donated.
ETC.
