a lot of our food is local: eggs, milk, butter, yogurt and many cheeses, a lot of different fruits and veggies. we eat mostly local about 2/3 of the year. but once november comes and until april or may, most of our produce comes from a good distance (across coutnry, sometimes across oceans!).

we're happy with it. but yeah, we don't actually have a ton of packaging. for the two of us, we're mortified to have two bags (13 gal) of trash each week.

there is a book called Your Money or YOur Life which is about living simply, and part of it is getting down to as little trash as possible. interesting stuff. there's a couple in the book who have 1/2 bag of trash per year!

Our local grocery chain, although it has recently been purchased by a national grocery chain, is doing a very good job of getting and marketing local crops, meat, etc. But honestly, I still see far more people poking around in the organic area than the local area in the produce aisle. To me, local often trumps organic, though if they are local AND organic, so much the better.
