Subject: Too old to hope to teach?

Hello! I have had a home practice for some time, and recently became involved with a wonderful Iyengar studio. I feel I have found a great fit with Iyengar, and hope to eventually progress to teacher training.

My question is this; while I certainly have and look forward to the 3+ years to learn Iyengar methods before TT would become a possibility, would I then, at 40, be too old to be a beginning teacher? It just seems that most teachers I have met in the 40+ age group have been teaching forever. Is it too late?

Thank you!

NO! Definitely not! My first teacher started teaching later than that, and one of the folks in my teacher training class was a doctor just retiring. Follow your passion! That's what matters.

No, 40 is not old at all. I know people who got certifed after 40, including the ones who attended my TT. (I am small guy compared to Iyengar TT program. Small in size, I mean.) They are doing fantastic.

Thank you for the encouragement! I am very pleased to hear about the existance of new, mature teachers. My experience had only been with very young new teachers, or mature teachers who have been at it for years.

I intend to forge ahead with my learning, and see where it takes me.

When the call to share yoga with others by serving as a conduit for it comes from the heart that call transcends age.

A great example of a wonderful woman who had that “call from her heart” (like purnayogi said), started yoga at the age of 48, practiced and taught yoga until her 90ies and also wrote a very interesting and influential book titled “Awakening the Spine”: check in the internet for Vanda Scaraveli

Scaravelli to the max!

I sometimes wonder about being too young (at 24) to be teaching Iyengar yoga.
But as the other's have said, the call to teaching transcends age.

Perhaps your age would prevent you from advancing into the upper echelons of Iyengar certification, but it doesn't seem that you're after that.
More than anything, your age would bring 40 years of life experience into your teaching.

Additionally, you don't have to have a huge amount of experience to take some Iyengar teacher trainings (just a huge amount of money ). If you are seriously interested, maybe find a teacher training program through an advanced/senior teacher close to you.
More than anything just start teaching.
...
Amaranth is a fine grain.

Most of my Iyengar teaching peers were in their 40's when they began TT and I have a friend in her 60's who is just completing her first year of training. Youth is over rated.

As opposed to "youth is wasted on the young".

Personally, I believe that you're never too old to start living... and always too young to stop.
