Dear BQM: Is the wooden floor of your display your home? It is fan tas tic.

And, your strawberries are worthy of being placed on it.

Dear Neel,
If that's a floor I'll eat my hat Or Shelly's gone out and cut down the oldest living redwood in the world, which is the only way you could get a wooden floor like that-I'm going to report her

My guess is that it is a dining table or coffee table. Gorgeous! And so are those berries. Shelly, I have been looking at beading stuff lately - I've got an urge to make evening bags. A girl can't have too many evening bags - and they alway fit even if you gain weight!

Sorry to disappoint you Neel, and as much as I would love to see Nick eat his hat, yes, it's a table. My husband and I refinished it years ago because it was really dark and not very nice. Much better to be able to see the wood grain under all that ugly stain.

The strawberries are the only finished part of my daughter's graduation outfit. I've been doing way too much procrastination on the rest of the clothing that goes with it. She worked very hard all these years, and so now it's my turn to work to graduate her in style. Then I'll have to work on letting her go without clinging. I think I might have to work harder at that part.

Thanks Tourist, I've been wanting someone to crack the whip at me and get me going. My excuse for procrastinating yesterday is the crazy spring storm we had yesterday afternoon. Can you believe we had a tornado watch? We ended up not getting one and I'm thankful for that. We've never had a tornado here my whole life and just to get the watch warning was kind of freaky.

The weather is making everyone a little (or a lot) more aware of what the world is experiencing. It is cold here - 12 degrees C yesterday (51 F). Now, that is not impossible for the coast of BC at this time of year, but it is not usual to have it go on and on like it has been. The strawberry farmers here (the ones with dirt and water 'n stuff - not beads... ) often are freaking out that the crop, which is due any minute, will fail. And some years it is pretty bad, but I think this is going to be a serious loss year for them if that sun doesn't stop frying the east and give us a little love and warmth out here in the west!

Consider the whip cracked - the BIG event must be soon!

I was worried about the farmers the other day too. They mentioned hail, and that would really ruin everything. We were really lucky, a lot of towns around us had way more damage with trees blown down, and power lines down. I can't imagine what we would do without agricultural produce, we can't all live by eating our hats. The straw ones might be good in fiber, but the wool ones sit in my intestines like a giant hair ball.

I'm happy to report some progress in my workroom too. That whip cracking really helped, and things are rolling along now. The big day is the 25th, but of course I don't want to finish at the last minute. I have a history of that.

That's why they invented fusible web!

Oh - and we need to see the shoes, too....

Fusible Web!! Oh the horror, the horror.

I have to admit, we're pretty much stumped on the shoes issue, for now at least. I'm pretty sure it will take a joint shopping expedition. Ugh, talk about horrors.

I can remember that issue with my DD as well. She is a size 10 1/2 or 11 (Dad's gene's, not mine) and has a hard time finding shoes she likes. She hated the pair she eventually bought and never wore them again. I think that's why she went barefoot at her wedding ceremony and only had simple but pretty flip flops from Payless for the rest of the day.

About the farmers and the BEES....

This is a very unusual year. Yesterday I had a swarm, and so did 2 other beekeepers in the town next door. It's been wild for swarming bees this year. This morning I was at the post office. I asked the delivery guy if he saw my bees yesterday and he actually said yes, he did. He was telling me where he and my neighbor on the other street were standing outside watching them go by. So funny. Today I was splitting hives to make sure I didn't loose any more. Oh well.

Hey Cyndi,
Have you seen this new book, it's called 'a world without bees.' I just saw it today in the Guardian newspaper-it's on the link below:

http://tinyurl.com/3ugp64

I didn't know that Einstein once said "If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left."

Hopefully this will lead to a greater public awareness-the paper is organizing a couple of meetings on the subject, which I've never heard of happening yet in this country. Maybe that will get things rolling.

No, I haven't seen this book. I like the title though.

I use Einstein's quote all the time - especially when I'm having "bee" discussions during the farmer's market on Saturdays. People always want to discuss the bees and what's going on with them. I try to be diplomatic about it, but sometimes, there will be that one person that comes along and you just want to smack across the face. Like the guy last weekend who didn't dare say "what's all this stuff about going green, this is wierd" to me, he was a chicken and said it to my husband. I also used Einstein's quote in my FAQ's on my website. It's my favorite one. It's so profound, to the point...unfortunately, people still don't get it.

Speaking of getting it. Last weekend, this woman was trying to give away free kittens where we were doing a weekend long market in another town on Sunday. She was wiping these kittens down with Lysol Bathroom Disenfectant Wipes. I was like WTF??? She was telling people they were baby wipes. After I pointed this out to her, she was like, oh, it won't hurt them. I said, "Lady, look at the bottle here" (I picked up the bottle to show her the ingredients with the poison skull and all) IT'S FRIGGIN POISON!!!! I said, "You are poisoning your kitten's. Don't worry, you won't have to worry about finding homes, they'll be dead soon". I get so frustrated sometimes,

Hi Tourist, my daughter has that same size feet. Maybe that's why they avoid shoe shopping. That's too bad though, they are both tall and so they need that size feet not to tip over. My daughter wore new running shoes to the prom, so they have similar style as well. I hope my girl doesn't read this or she'll be trying to wear flipflops to her graduation.

Hi Cyndi, what happens when your bees swarm? Do some of them just fly off for good?

Hey Shelley,

What happens is that the colony gets too big. The bees prepare way in advance for this event. No matter what I do, they are bees and do what bees do. Sometimes splitting the hives helps, but I can only keep so many bee hives, YIKES!! So, the old queen flies off with half the bees, and leaves the virgin queen and bees behind. It's an incredible thing to watch. I have these Italian bees which are notorious for swarming. Yesterday I split this huge hive in hopes that they won't swarm. I screwed up their plans yesterday. They'll have no choice but to make me some Sourwood honey now,
