Does anyone want to share their experience studying with someone? My favorites are Manju Jois and David Swenson.

I love my Ashtanga teacher, but I don't think he has a name I can name drop.
hnia |
| ||
Why? Are you trying to stay hidden?

Nick on this forum He has the BALLS to be his own person and not buy into the yoga cult of repeating stuff without examining there own practice.

It's nice that you have a teacher that suits you, but don't take my thread and turn it into Nick is the only ashtanga teacher in the world that is good because he does his own thing!
| |||

Hi hnia. Right I've been studying yoga for 16 years in that time I've studied with a lot of teachers I'll give you the list: Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Shrath (His grandson) Rolf Naujokat (One of Pattabhis most experienced teacher who he uses on most of his demos, he's the face on the front of Pattabhis book of the biography of his world tours) David Williams (The first westerner to learn the series and bring it to the west) Nancy Gilgoff (First western woman to learn the series the ex wife of David Williams) Danny Paradise (Yogi to the stars) John Scott David Swenson Richard Freeman Leela Miller (Director of Yoga at Tri Yoga Primrose Hill) My point being I made that statement with a lot of experience behind it.

How about defining "studying with someone." I took a standing room only 3 day seminar with David Swenson. I wouldn't say I studied with him. Interesting, informative but not study. Vic Yeah - I got to name drop too

I started studying with him in 1993 daily for about 3 to 6 months at a time in Goa India for about 10 years. And some of that was one on one personal tuition at my home and he and his wife are close personal friend of mine, please contact him to verify this. P.S. Hi Cindy

Fantastic List. I'm looking forward to studying with Jois at the end of the month. Just three days.. but still

They put a lot into those three days.. I love David's back bending adjustments. The one that he partners up with and you do a handstand and then grab the ankles of the other person and hang upside down in a backbend..

I can't boast anything like the number of teachers that Phil has experienced but I've tried a few around the UK and I have to say that I was very impressed with Nick's teaching when I met up with him last year (must meet up again soon Nick). I'd also recommend Charlie Taylor Rugman. I've been to his mysore class several times and he's been very helpful to me. Very knowlegeable and approachable. Ian

Hi Phil, You know I've been feeling that Nick has a tendency to be overly intense. He kind of intimidates me. But ,I like the way you have interpreted him. You are right! He doesn't buy into the hype and wants to give clear information. Thanks, Holly (1st time submitter, long time lurker in the forum.)

i took a few workshops with manju jois, though i mostly practice astanga with beryl bender birch. i've taken a couple of teacher trainings with her, and i also try to get to a workshop with her about once a year. i do consider her one of my teachers; i don't really think of manju as one of my teachers.
| |||
Welcome Holly and don't be intimidated by Nick--he's a good man.

Hear hear. Not scary at all, even though sometimes there's a little too much detail and no pictures! He's great with analogies though not too hot on his trigonometry (in joke)! Ian

Location: London, England | I fully agree Ian Although, in my defence, I think you misunderstood me-I thought about it later-when I said to look at right angles, I meant a right angle from the hypoteneuse, not a right angle from the floor-so then the eyes are not looking straight down, but ahead Nick Edited by Nick 2008-08-02 2:08 PM

Ah yes, but strictly speaking, in a right angled triangle the hypotenuse is the side opposite the right angle. I know what you meant though. Looking forward rather than down will lengthen the back/neck and help you reach further forward. It was your trigonometry, not your yoga knowledge that I was being pedantic about. Off to Beijing for 3 weeks. Hoping I can access the internet in some form to keep up with the forum! Ian

Just wanted to give a mention to Philippa Asher at Triyoga in Soho, London. I've been to her Mysore session twice in the same number of weeks. She's a fantastic teacher and has moved my practice so far in just a couple of visits. The atmosphere is friendly and her adjustments are spot on. Best of all, it's not just adjustment but real teaching that you get from her classes. David Swenson was taking an Ashtanga intensive next door but I was happy where I was. Highly recommended, and the showers are fantastic. Happy Christmas one and all, Ian
