Subject: sleep and congestion

Hi guys, I'm having a problem... Please help

For about the past 6 years, I've been having all sorts of weird fatigue and emotional problems, and I've been looking into a number of different possible causes. For a number of years, I have been aware that I am particularly sensitive to not getting enough sleep. However, for the past few years, I've been having a problem with feeling tired and sometimes nodding off during the day despite getting a solid 8-9 hours of sleep every night. Furthermore, sometimes I wake up with a headache in the morning.

So, I went to a sleep specialist, thinking that it could be sleep apnea. A sleep study was done, and the report is that I slept for only a few hours for my sleep study, but there is no evidence of sleep apnea. The doctor is ordering for a new sleep study, but says that it might be some sort of chronic sinus irritation.

You see, I'm not overweight, but I do have some difficulty breathing through my nose. I used to be about completely unable to breathe through my nose, but I forced myself to switch from mouth breathing to nose breathing after reading about the supposed health benefits. Now, I feel like I can't go back.

I practice Bikram yoga regularly, and my nose totally opens up when I'm practicing, but even still sometimes I wake up from my sleep barely able to move air through my nose! I almost always have some serious congestion in at least one nostril, and I live down in the tropics so the changing of the seasons doesn't do anything for me.

I hate waking up feeling exhausted and the sleep specialist doesn't seem equipped to recommend anything particularly effective for this supposed chronic sinus irritation, so can you guys suggest how I might be able to heal my body with yoga?

I have tried neti as well as the nasal strips, but both seem to provide limited relief at best.

How long have you been practicing please?
Describe the frequency et al.
When do you practice, how often and so on.

How old are you? What is your health background?

What is your diet like? What things do you avoid and what things do you eat?

What is your bed made from?

I use Traditional Chinese Medicine for these kinds of problems. Being a beekeeper, I have issues like these. I treat my situation with acunpuncture and a chinese herbal formula to help with this. It could also be that not only do you have a lung imbalance, but mold issues as well.

I've been practicing Bikram's solidly for about three months. I've practiced other styles on and off over the years, but I really like the vigorous Bikram's practice. I practice about 4-5, or sometimes 6 times a week.
I practice at different times of day, depending on my work schedule.

How old are you? What is your health background?

I am 24. Other than this irritating problem, I am in excellent health. I am about 170 lbs and 6'0.

I like to load up on fresh fruits. I'm also a big seafood eater. I don't eat much dairy products.

What is your bed made from?

I can't say, but I've been sleeping on several beds since I've had this problem.

It seems like no matter what I do, my nose and sinuses get irritated every night and make it difficult to breathe. One thing that I have noticed, is that the congestion seems to be worst when I lie supine ( face up ). It's frustrating because this seems to be otherwise the most comfortable position to sleep in. I remember reading somewhere that some people with sleep-breathing disorders do get relief by sleeping on their stomach or side, but I find both to be uncomfortable.

I'd like to add one more thing. I don't suffer from sneezing, wheezing, or runny nose on a regular basis. It's just congestion.

Since the doctor spoke with me about this, I feel like I'm making it worse just by thinking about it too much.
