| Any hikers on here? Specifically those that practice Bikram? im training to do a SOBO (south bound) Thru-hike on the Appalachian trail in 2-3 years depending on timing.
Anyone here ever hiked the AT? I'm curious to find out how many Bikram-ites have hiked it and if bikram has helped.

| well, i suppose i technically "shouldn't" answer.
i haven't hiked the whole AT--just parts of it--and i don't do bikram.
but, i can say that yoga does wonders for hiking.
on year, my husband and i were going with friends to hike from katadan and a bit south, then going up to canada to do some hiking up there. it was a nice trip.
anyway, for about 7-8 months, i'd stopped all of my 'regular' training such as weights, cardio, etc, and just focused on my yoga. my husband and my friends said that i wouldn't be able to handle the hike, etc, and were teasing me about it.
i was the first to the top of katadan, and i did well on all of the hikes--no problem with being out of breath, no problem with feet, etc. it was easy.
so, i think yoga helps, particularly the breathing. |

| Breathing for sure helps...
Also having good alignment will keep you in good shape on the trail...
might want to learn some stuff you can do independently of a heated room, so you can practice and realign yourself after long hikes.
good luck!

Location: Somewhere in the Mountains of Western NC | Hey Sarah,
The AT is up my alley and I do Bikram. Actually, I live where the AT crosses through in the Western North Carolina mountains. I've been hiking this trail for years and it is incredible.
Although, when I was picked up from the airport 2 days ago, I was informed some terrible news about an incident that happened on a trail that I hike very frequently. It was very disturbing to say the least. You should google the Blood Mountain incident on New Years Day, it was one of the most horrific crimes I've ever heard about related with the AT. I've decided that Yodha my Rottweiler is not enough to keep me safe, so therefore, from now on, I will be carrying my pistol or a similar weapon at all times now when out in the wilderness.
So, if you're ever around the NC area, give me a shout, I'll bring ya a cup of chai and hike a little ways with ya.
Ciao, |
