Subject: Stilling the mind

In the beginning of my meditations I use these dharanas to still my mind:

1. Breathing in and out repeating my mantra.
2. Offering my thoughts to Consciousness.
3. Picturing light in my spine.
4. Witnessing my thoughts (my favourite).
5. Just being aware.

How do you guys/gals start your practise.

i was first trained in zazen, which is basically breathing and allowing thoughts to flow through the mind.

The only way i've been able to constantly keep my mind clear is by laying down and focusing on a mantra. If something comes into my mind i'll imagine it being pushed out. No deep breathing, very strict and suited completely for focus. It took inbetween 1-3 weeks to be succesful.

I also meditate the way zoe does.

I also just let the thoughts flow through my mind. When I first started meditating, the thoughts flowed and after about 45 minutes, all of that emotion resolved to one. It always had to do with wanting to grasp something. Obviously the only thing I could do was let it go into the Consciousness and get an answer back about having to act a certain way so that eventually the grasping went away. That took several decades of hard work meditating every day to get rid of the grasping.

I visualize a candle light in my minds eye and then focus on my breathing.
