Supermarket staff refused to sell alcohol to a white-haired 72-year-old man - because he would not confirm he was over 21:

Four weeks after my son was born, I tried to fly out of Beirut airport with him but was stopped because he didn't have a form saying he had completed his one year military service.

I looked at the guard as if he was joking but he was completely serious, even after I pointed out (rather obviously) that at four weeks old he was a little young to be a draft dodger. But without the paper he refused to let us fly.

So now, nothing amazes me when it comes to stupid people

May be he is referring to the past birth, Jonniebhai. I give certificates for the past births only. I think past births are generally better than the today's world!!!!

I hate to say that most of the time things need to be "dumbed down".. but I have found this alot in my industry (restaurant biz).. we aren't exactly attracting the cream of the crop- the brilliant, bright young hopefuls. Or at least they don't act like that. Now, don't get me wrong- I have many bright people working for me. But when it comes to just doing the job...... we have found that you can't assume anything. The minute you do, someone makes a ridiculous mistake that can cause disastrous (sp?) results. Now, I'm not saying the old guy shouldn't have gotten his booze... but if it's company policy to card everyone- than the customer should have brought ID with him. Period.

To ask the employee to break the rule is to 1. put his job on the line 2. make him think- which can be a disaster. In VA, to get busted in an ABC raid is to cost the employer $10,000, the employee $2000 or $4000- I can't remember.... basically, enough to sink a small business. Not to mention a year's worth of hearings and legal fees.

In the UK there is actually no legal requirement to either carry or show I.D.

Things do need to get dumbed down though occassionally, which is why if you buy an iron the instructions tell you 'don't iron clothes while wearing them'

He's adorable!!

If people in UK do not have to carry ID or show it, how do they enforce the drinking age... isn't it 18?
In the US, you aren't required to carry ID, but if you don't show it when asked (when ordering drinks) the business has the right to refuse service.

Hi MaryLisa,
You only have to show ID if you want to buy alcohol and you want to prove you are old enough-same as you.

Therein lies the dilemma, Jos. There's a proof of age scheme that students (mainly) use in relation to alchohol consumption. You also have to prove your age to buy knives, glue, sun-bed treatments, over-18 media, and ciggies... in theory.

I have trouble ID-wise because I don't drive and have paid off my mortgage. Many establishments, such as banks, want the driving license for proof of ID and the mortgage payment line on my bank statement as proof of residence. I end up having to show them my passport and land registry details and even then they look at me as if I'm about to draw a sawn-off out my knickers! So, this is what I get for being eco-friendly and and fiscally responsible. And folk wonder why kids today ain't!

The UK government want to introduce a non-compulsory ID scheme to combat terrorism. This is an act of civil service lunacy that only Whitehall Mandarins are truly capable of...

- Terrorists have access to large amounts of money (explosives don't come cheap you know) so, QED, they can afford to hire forgers.
- We all have an ID number already - our National Health System reference.
- We all already have access to an optional ID system, complete with biometrics - the Passport Office.

So quite how another 'optional' system is supposed to combat terrorism is quite beyond me!

And don't even get me started on the government's track record on data security and IT projects that typically run massively over-time and budget!!!!
