hy ashtangis was wondering how long it roughly takes you to do the primary series?
TampaEric |
| ||
It takes me about 1 hour and 35 minutes including savasana. Sometimes a little more sometimes a little less. I also teach led classes that run 1:35 minutes. How bout you?
jonnie |
| ||
90 - 120 mins depending on how many breaths I hold each asana for, and if I do full or half vinyasa. Jonathon

Takes me about 2 hours, my friend who is doing ashtanga teacher training with brian cooper gets them to do it in 90 mins, but I find it impossible, maybe my breaths are too ,long?

There's a lot of ifs.. If I do a long shoulderstand and handstand.. say 20-25 breath. If I do 10 count finishing, 8 or 5 count. If I do a long tolasana at the end..If I do the opening and closing chant... a very study 5 count breath and you will be done within 1.30. However usually the vinyasas are faster. Jumpbacks to chaturanga don't take 10 seconds. if you know what I mean.. I want to study with him. If you are doing the practice 6 times a week, you are going to want to get it done in 1.5. Plus, when you start adding intermediate..that will add 15 plus minutes.. If you only do the practice a few times a week, you can spend longer.

Jump back from forward bend.

Dordy, that sounds impressive, it only takes me five, do you do handstand inbetween? Do you still teach ashtanga style yoga jonnie?
| |||
90-120 minutes on average. it's a great two hour practice (i prefer long holds), but i can usually do it in slightly less than 90 if i must.

Yes thats me ! I like long holds, otherwise I feel as if Im rushing through. Dont get time to practice everyday at the minute, my boys (4 and 7) take all my time as they are off school for summer hols - 3 months in cyprus!!! by the time they go to bed, I can barely keep my eyes open to meditate, quite happy with long savsana, but I am missingf my quiet daily practice

How on now.. from forward bend.. There are three vinyasas... inhale head up exhale hands down 1 inhale lift 2 exhale chaturanga. 3 so is is 24 seconds? Or are you just counting lift to chaturanga..
raquel |
| ||
thats what I thought lift to chat is about 8 secs with me Edited by raquel 2007-08-22 1:52 PM

From Uttanasana there is an inhale as we look up. Start the clock I jump back to plank, begin the exhale and lower down with control to chaturanga dandasana and hold that pose until I finish the breath - 12 seconds. Edited by jonnie 2007-08-22 2:16 PM

Hmm.. now you are saying 12 sec exhale.. This would be a very long practice. Not suitable for me to maintain throughout the entire practice. When I study with a senior teacher in Sept. I will ask him for his opinion. I do 3-5 second inhale 3-5 exhale for the entire practice. Seated vinyasas are slightly faster for me.

TampaEric - 2007-08-23 10:30 PM Hmm.. now you are saying 12 sec exhale.. Hi Eric, To be honest, that was timing that one move. In a complete practise, where the movement becomes repetitive it would probably average at 8 seconds. How do you fill your lungs with a 3-5 second inhale/exhale? Over a 90 minute class I would be concerned about the possibility of hyperventilation. Jonathon

Location: London, England | Hi Jonathon, You truly are an unusual person if you are exhaling for 12 seconds through that movement Most people would be half-dead after six seconds of a slow lift back like that. I can see I'm going to have to work on plank, or borrow your boy and get strong arms You're not from planet Krypton, are you? (Humbly) Nick

Location: London, England | Hi Jonathon, Hang on a minute-when you say you jump back to plank, do you start exhaling before you begin the lift, or after your feet have hit the floor-the way you word it, it sounds like the latter, which I've never come across Nick Edited by Nick 2007-08-22 2:53 PM

Mine would be inhale ardha uttanasana 4 sec. exhale Chaturanga 4 seconds.. I don't know Jonnie. When I swim I take a full breath in through my mouth in less than a second. I swim pretty slow and steady just like I practice. For me the low belly is fairly still and a 3-5 second (more 5 than 3) is best. My students have a hard time with a 5 sec count, too. I do get dizzy sometimes..not sure about hyperventilation or low blood pressure, thouh..

I can see I'm going to have to work on plank, or borrow your boy and get strong arms You're not from planet Krypton, are you? (Humbly) Nick If I was from Krypton I'd fly over to south London and give you a slap I don't think that I'm explaining myself very well. After Eric's comment of "Jumpbacks to chaturanga don't take 10 seconds", I thought 'how long do mine take?' So I timed that one move, which took 12 seconds.

Nick - 2007-08-23 10:50 PM Hi Jonathon, Hang on a minute-when you say you jump back to plank, do you start exhaling before you begin the lift, or after your feet have hit the floor-the way you word it, it sounds like the latter, which I've never come across Nick No, the breath always envelops the movement. What I'm saying is start the exhale, jump back, lower to chaturanga dandasana, complete the breath. Jonathon
