The Grand Show

The grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never dried all at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor is ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal dawn and gloaming, on sea and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls. - John Muir

" I read a science fiction book awhile back that wasn't very well written, but one piece of it keeps coming back to me. In the book, the sprawl of humanity had so fouled the Earth that all the birds have died off. I can't get the picture out of my mind - the idea of standing in a forest, in a field or at the ocean, walking through an orchard, and hearing only silence where the songs of birds should be. How devastatingly sad a place the world would be without birds! Then I am forced to remember that this is not so far removed from where we are at today. Every year, thousands of living species crowded out of their niches die and are gone forever."

As a species, we suffer from the same shortsightedness we struggle with as individuals- only the consequences are dramatically magnified. Our preoccupation with ourselves, and our difficulty seeing ourselves as part of a much larger picture, has led us down a trail of squandering and abuse of the riches that make our planet.

As individuals who wish to bring more kindness, love, and compassion into the world, it is time for us to step back and clearly see our place in the grand show of creation so that we may act our part respectfully and appropriately. We are unique among all the creatures and organisms of this world. And the very qualities that make us unique dictate for us the sacred role of stewards of creation. In our ignorance and conceit, however, we have interpreted that extraordinary gift as permission to blindly plunder for our own narrow and immediate purposes.

Each of us can begin to take our responsibility seriously. We can act the part of a caring steward to all creation and never lose track of our place in the grand show.
