I'm wondering what it takes, in terms of months, years, hours of study/experience, to get this level of certification in Iyengar yoga. (Please understand I am not asking you to describe and list here everything one would encounter on the road to this level.) I also am aware that the answer may vary greatly according to the devotion and intensity each person puts into their study. But there must be an average. Just some idea- would it take most students 10 years? More? A certain amount of hours/years at each level?

And does one need to study in Pune to get to this level?

I've heard 15 years to be a master. We have 2 masters on this forum. You should PM them for more details.

My teacher has been teaching for about 25 years and just got her SI 1. But we are a bit behind in certs here in Canada. I would guess 15 - 20 years and a very strong practice with intense learning, multiple trips to India and a LOT of teaching. One issue with teaching is that you need to be in a place where there are students at that level to teach.

My teacher recieved her SI in just under ten years, though eight of those were studying full time in Pune.

For us mere mortals , I think approx 15 years would be the average (though if you look at the certification standards it is possible to complete it quicker). Iyengar teachers (generally) are not looking for the quick route to certification though.

You don't need to go to Pune, but it would definately help.

Ten years - all Iyengar. I did dabble as a teen in whatever was floating around back then and kept an interest in the intervening years, but certainly don't count them

I don't know about elsewhere, but for Canada, to get beyond Intermediate you have to go to Pune. You can't train teachers unless you have been a few times.
