I always belt the elbows in sarvangasana and I also put a folded mat/blanket under them (not the whole mat folded, but just half of it so that it’s not that thick).
Those were again the instructions of my teacher to the whole of the class.
I presume that this folded mat/blanket just helps to really put your weight on the elbows/arms instead of the neck/head especially in cases when someone is not that flexible in the shoulders so as to manage to bring the arms perfectly rectangular to the raised body.

Hi Sb,
That's probably because the belt was removing the need for yuo to try to find good posture-which then means that you are turning off the anti-gravity muscles which would have given you good posture. So the posture itself suffers, and so does your posture outside of class-in my humble opinion.

Nick - the trick is to use the belt in the beginning to learn how the elbows should be held and then learn how to not use the belt. How long to use the belt? Depends on how tight the shoulders are and how/how much you practice. Props are not crutches. People who study in Pune find they are chastised just as often for taking a prop that is unnecessary as they are for not taking a prop when it is really needed. The people I teach all need belts, as do I.
