I heard from my Iyengar yoga teacher (back 10 years ago), that you dont want to train inversions after twists or bends (forward, backward, etc.) Now my problem: my memory is faulty--this was ten years ago! What did she likely REALLY say? does anybody know about this?

Ask her what SHE really said. Who knows:-)

Asana practice depends on the desired effect (and thus so deos sequencing).
Inversions soften and release the invertebral muscles and so they are a precursor, obviously, for twisting.

Typically, but not always (never "always" ) headstand, handstand and all the variations you can muster, then backbends, followed by twists with shoudlerstand and forward bends in either order to finish.

purna and others can address the esoteric reasons for some of the sequencing, but basically, headstand and back bends are energizing and "warming." Twists after backbends bring the spinal muscles back to a neutral place, shoulderstand and forward bends calm and cool the nervous system, preparing the body and mind for savasana. This is Iyengar practice and other forms have other reasons for working other ways, but I have found it to be true.

es·o·ter·ic /??s?'t?r?k/ Pronunciation[es-uh-ter-ik]
–adjective
1. understood by or meant for only the select few who have special knowledge or interest; recondite: poetry full of esoteric allusions.
2. belonging to the select few.
3. private; secret; confidential.
4. (of a philosophical doctrine or the like) intended to be revealed only to the initiates of a group: the esoteric doctrines of Pythagoras.

While I rarely quibble with the likes of Tourist (Iyengis intimidate me) I don't think inverting to release muscles surrounding the spine is particularly "esoteric" as Webster defines it. Anatomical perhaps.

Ok - the dictionary doesn't lie Perhaps I was meaning the "deeper" aspects or "spiritual" aspects or even more about the anatomy than I am equipped to explain. I must practice saucha in speech. Runs off to write this many times as a mantra and ask forgiveness of Patanjali

But I gotta say - I do love to intimidate people
