your menstruation?

I've read certain asanas are good for cramps and other syptoms, but how do you know when to not do yoga at all during your period?

Rachel - I do specialized Iyengar practices for menstruation. They are wonderful. Lois Steinberg, who has studied extensively with the Iyengar's says, "Deeper insight into yoga will occur when practice is tailored according to need and invites no harm." It is one of the nicest explanations of why we should do spceialized practices for menstruation I have heard

well, i do and i don't, depending upon how i feel.

but, i've found that iyengar's sequence for labor (as in birth), is an excellent sequence during menstruation, and there are a few others.

I'll have to check into that zb
I tend not to practice at that time. I use it as a restorative time. I may do a few light restorative postures....but not an entire practice. I've done this most of my life- even before yoga. Exercise never made any of the symptoms better- as I kept hearing- I always felt worse. So I have always taken that time off.... now, granted, mine only lasts for about 3 days..
I would probably do things differently if it were a lot longer. Someone posted here a few months ago about how her period lasted sometimes for 20 or more days! I'm not sure I'd sit out for that long..

Absolutely teri! You might want to get Patirica Walden and Linda Sparrowe's book of women's health and yoga. It has some nice practices in it. In general, a good asana practice will often help, but some targeted work before, during and after menstruation will help more. There is a big, expensive manual out now by Lois Steinberg that shows some of the really specialized (and prop intensive) work for women and menstruation, but you really need to know a LOT about Iyengar work to use it and you have to have a lot of props available to do some of the poses.

Listen to your body. And act on it. Only you know if its a practice day or not. As a rule I follow the ashtanga 3 days ladies holiday.

I have tried ti reply to this thread 3 times!! and each time the site just times out and I lose everything.

Tourist, I will keep an eye out for that book next time i'm at borders books.

To the member who said they don't practice for those 3 days..I think I might do the same now until I can educate myself on what are 100% safe asanas to do while mestruating.

thanks everyone for your advice.

During the menstral cycle we do a sequence specifically designed to complement the body's own cleansing flow. It's a restorative practice and effort is significantly reduced while bolsters are significantly increased:-)

i do a few asanas and never lower my head lower than my heart, and also avoid the abdomen-stressed asanas, as my teacher told me.
If i want to, i also do meditation while enjoy music.
