Subject: Need help with my oral hygiene

I am a 20 year old Male.

My big problem first of all is that lately I have been noticing the taste of my mouth becoming more bitter than normal, and I find myself periodically trying to clean my mouth with my tongue when my mouth doesn't feel that clean. While I do this cleaning and general roaming of my mouth I can smell a bad breath roaming around in there. It isn't horrible, but it gets me nervous since I am at an age where I plan to be more active in dating.

Let me first give as much info as I can about whatever happens to my mouth.

My diet consists of this everyday:

Breakfast - 2 Tuna Fish sandwiches (Whole Wheat bread, the tuna for the sandwiches come from one can)
- 1 Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich (Whole Wheat bread)
- 1 Cup (Or a bit over a cup's worth) of Non Fat Milk.

Lunch - 1 Power Bar (I usually eat the Peanut Butter or Oatmeal raisin flavored ones)
- 1 Non Fat Yogurt (Dannon brand, various flavors)

Dinner - 1 light meal (This meal can be anything, but I keep it light and nothing too fatty)
- 1 Can of Tuna.
- I usually chomp down some snacks (I just got off of fatty snacks and I stick to baked snacks such as Goldfish crackers)
- Fruits (never a set amount, I just chomp down on a couple bananas, apples, strawberries etc.)
- 1 Cup of Non Fat Milk (Or a bit over 1 cup)

I also drink 2 quarts+ of water throughout the day.

I brush 2 times a day mainly (3 times on weekends), I use Colgate toothpaste and for the past month I have been using Arm & Hammer Advanced Whitening toothpaste on the side, but I stopped using it a couple days ago. I also use Listerine and for the past 2 months I have been actively scrubbing my tongue daily because I let it go bad I think. I also use a cheap tongue scraper sometimes after scrubbing my tongue. No matter what I do since those past 2 months, the white grime of my tongue doesn't completely go away, it kind of regenerates over the course of the day

I brush my teeth when I wake up and I goggle with Listerine, and then I eat my breakfast (see above), I do not brush again after I eat. Throughout the day I do nothing but drink water, and then I have my light lunch as you can see above and that is about it. When I arrive home, I eat what I eat as can be seen above, and then I brush my teeth about 1-2 hours later. I do not goggle with Listerine after my night brushing. I do not actively floss, but I do have a floss that is attached to a handle.

Could my bad breath, bitter taste in my mouth be caused by the tuna I eat? Not brushing after I eat in the morning? Bad diet? (Although this diet is essential to my workouts)? Something wrong with my mouth? My tongue may need harder cleaning practices? etc. etc.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

stop eating tuna and bread
get yourself a sonicare toothbrush

go with some oatmeal for breakfast

stop drinking milk

stay away from dairy

that might fix it, or maybe not, but it's worth a try.

No milk and tuna?

That cuts off like 46g of my protein

No bread? thats like 16g of protein

Maybe I have to resort to protein supplements if I am to cut down on my big protein pumpers.

Thanks for the help thornley.

Anyone else have additional info?

Well I didn't drink any milk for a couple of weeks, and the coating would still regenerate.

I did not take the best care of my tongue for MANY years (childhood negligence), so I figured it would be tough to get off, but then I doubt years of negligence was that big of a problem because I did drink water etc. that washes my tongue out, so I figured it was more of a daily diet thing instead of a "many years of neglegence" thing.

Do you still think it is milk? I am not sure myself.

P.S - When I say I didn't take the best care of my tongue, I mean I didn't scrub or scrape it. It's been around 6 months that I have been actively scrubbing it, and around 1 month that I have been actively scraping it along with the scrubbing. I would scrape my tongue over and over, close my mouth and then reopen and the coating would still be there although it was dull, and most of it was gone for the most part, but then it would regenerate over the course of the day.

I forgot one big thing.

I use retainers, I put them on after I brush every night, and take them off every morning before I brush my teeth.

The retainers have years of food stains, I was stubborn when I was young and when I first got the retainers. My father would tell me not to eat with them on etc. but I would still be lazy and just take poor care of them. They still fit my mouth and I still wear them, but there are a good amount of year old food stains on them. Although, do note I have been wearing them with the food stains for years now, and I recently found this change in my oral hygiene here.

Come to think of it, I never drank non fat milk before, and I started drinking my first cup of it about a week or so ago, and this bad breath etc. started happening a couple days ago.

It kind of makes sense, I will quit the milk for now altogether and see what happens.

It's only 8g of protein a cup, I can make that up some other way.

You could check with your doctor or dentist. There are conditions like thrush (a fungal infection) that are easily curable. Do you practice yoga?

Hi Howdythere,

Your kidneys could use a break from all that protein.

Drink a freshly juiced 1 oz shot of wheatgrass juice. I glanced over your diet and I didn't see much produce - fruits and veggies. I eat by colors - some red, green, yellow/orange and blue EVERYDAY at least. Big on greens. Can't say enough about greens. Eat your greens! Eat a tomato every morning with your tuna. That's red.

I realize you're only 20 years old and buying a $5.00 little container of blueberries might cut into your budget but it's a good source of blue. Blue is really important, as is purple. Hello cabbage!

Look, I don't know any other way except to prepare your own food. Again, being 20, this could pose a logistical problem. But nothing is impossible.

The coating on your tongue canNOT be scraped off. It represents the state of your stomach (and spleen but mostly stomach). It should be thin and white. Look at a child's tongue; it's probably pink with a thin white coating (unless the parents have poisoned the kid with fruit loops).

Please eat from friggin' vegetables so your poor digestive system can function properly.

[all the info about tongues comes from the Chinese medical system of diagnostics {I didn't even touch on cracks or teethmarks on the tongue}]

fifi

P.S. FLOSS everyday, too.

hi Howdy,
You need about 50 g of protein every day-make sure that you get it elsewhere if you cut out the tuna and milk-I would rather have smelly breath than a protein deficiency-but then I am English

you don't chew tobacco, do you??
if so, stop
smoking? stop it

there are plenty of othe places to get your protein, but you could certainly try other foods

if you have thrush that would explain a lot

one of my babies had it, but the wife got it taken care of in a day of two, so we really never had a chance to watch it 'bloom',
good luck, young man

Howdythere: See my response with ===>

I am a 20 year old Male.
===> That is very young!

It isn't horrible, but it gets me nervous since I am at an age where I plan to be more active in dating.
===> This is good in a way because your smell sense is sharp and that way you know that there is something wrong with you. What is wrong with you is NOT with your mouth. So, there is no need to clearn it too much. You need to work on your stomach and blood.

===> Replace this whole thing with Sufficient amount of ONE kind of ripe fresh fruit in one breakfast. AND, nothing else.

Lunch - 1 Power Bar (I usually eat the Peanut Butter or Oatmeal raisin flavored ones)
- 1 Non Fat Yogurt (Dannon brand, various flavors)
===> Throw all the power bars and NON fat yogurt. Replace this with Fresh Green Salad and one thing out of these: Raw Nuts of one kind only or Brown Rice or Tabaluh or Chapati bread made at home by an Indian Lady (Cyndi will do as a proper altenative!)

===> Throw all the snacks you have. Replace this with either of a) Another kind of Fresh Fruits than what you ate in breakfast b) Same as Lunch with change in Grain or nuts

I also drink 2 quarts+ of water throughout the day.
===> Do NOT drink water unless you are really thirsty. Occassionally drink pure fruit juice with nothing else in it.

===> Throw all the tooth paste. And, use Indian Tooth Powder of Ayurvedic Type.

===> Continue the above for 3 motnhs with no break.

I brush my teeth when I wake up and I goggle with Listerine, and then I eat my breakfast (see above), I do not brush again after I eat. Throughout the day I do nothing but drink water, and then I have my light lunch as you can see above and that is about it. all that tuna sounds like a lot of mercury consumption. If it's chunk light that's supposed to be much better than solid albacore, but that's still a lot of tuna.

That's an excellent point, Aystam, about mercury.

You can still get enough protein and add veggies to your diet. I don't think it's that hard to get 50g of protein everyday, especially with all the protein powder supplements and protein bars and protein this and protein that.

All of us should strive to consume 5 - 9 servings of fruit and veggies. Have salsa with your eggs. (And buy the expensive eggs from the chickens that have access to the outdoors). If you can find a way this week to add sea cucumber to your diet then you deserve a prize.

Believe me, I am no vegetarian. I love lamb and beef and yes, BACON! But I add sprouts to my BTL.

Oh, BTW, bad breath is usually something rotting in your gut or bacteria in your gums. This is why flossing everyday is important. If you haven't flossed in a while then the first couple of times will be uncomfortable. Then it gets better. Then you can't live without flossing.
Good luck! fifi

ageed. i have a little travel brush/paste and floss that i take with me to use after meals as I had gingivitis and don't want it back! if something is smelly your tuna/snacks/breakfast bars are probably being finished off by bacteria. I also love water piks! throw a little mouthwash in the reservoir with some H20 and it gets your mouth/teeth feeling so fresh and clean. hmm.. i think i'll do that right now....

my sonicare tooth brush
strokes like 3000 times a minute or something crazy like that

POLISHES my teeth

i've used for about a year
when i go to the dentist they hardly have to clean my teeth, if i didn't drink coffee they'd probably not have to clean at all.

SO, get yourself to the dentist and buy a sonicare toothbrush
and stop eating tuna
and stop drinking milk----milk is for babies, you're practically a grown man, get your calcium from other sources, like a little cheese.
besides milk has a lot of sugar, but really i'm down on milk because

I used to drink a gallon a day when i was growing up, and i always wondered where the stomach pain i had was coming from....so when i went to college i stopped drinking it and WHAM! i felt a lot better.

but still,
"milk is for babies, men drink beer"--Arnold Schwarzenegger--Pumping Iron

LOL
I'm only joking, i don't drink any alcohol, drink water if you're thirsty, and make sure that it is clean water.

Peanuts, all other nuts, eggs, cheese, beans, whole grains---all of these have protein as well as other good for you nutrients

start eating flaxseed meal, or buy flaxseed and grind it up just before you put it on some oatmeal

Chewing a little fresh parsley is also supposed to help with fragrancing, especially if you've eaten something pungent.

while i agree with most of the advice here, i'd like to point out something that i find false in part, and true in part:

and stop drinking milk----milk is for babies, you're practically a grown man, get your calcium from other sources, like a little cheese.
besides milk has a lot of sugar, but really i'm down on milk because

actually, milk is quite healthy for adults and cheese is milk (as is yogurt and other milk-based products).

the problem with modern, pasturized and skimmed milk is that it is high in sugar, low in nutrients, and difficult to digest due to lack of natural enzymes. this causes all sorts of health problems--including problems with teeth and symptoms of lactose intolerance.

raw (unpasturized) whole milk is higher in nutrients, naturally lower in sugar (because it's higher in fat--GOOD fats), and more easily digested by adults (as well as children) because of the natural enzymes in the milk that break down the lactose for us.

therefore, if you want to consume milk, i would suggest consuming raw milk (and raw milk products such as raw cheese, raw butter, raw yogurt, etc).

and Arnold drinks milk--quite a bit of milk in fact--as his training diet was dictated in one of many books by and about him, which included a lot of milk, cheese, eggs, and traditional meat products.

anyway, that's a bug in my ear, that sort of misinformation.

Subject: RE: Need help with my oral hygiene

often, oral hygiene issues are related to deeper problems in the bodily system than simply what is going on in the mouth. a change of diet to high quality foods is probably in good order, and perhaps a brief (2-3 day) fast (tea, water) may be helpful as well. but it's an undertaking.

i go to the dentist once a year; i do not get my teeth cleaned/polished by them. it is unnecessary and can cause all sorts of problems with one's teeth. i go to a holistic dentist who checks for any problems, and then gives me his opinion of my mouth's cleanliness.

right now, i use all natural toothpaste once a day; all natural mouth wash once a day (i brush while using the mouth wash), and i dry brush (no toothpaste or mouth wash) once a day. I floss each morning. I brush my tongue.

in july, i'm going to learn to make my own toothpaste, mouth wash, and tooth polish powder. the powder should be used once a week; the tooth paste once a day; mouth wash once a day. I'll probably keep the same regimen.

i never liked getting my teeth cleaned--and so i finally asked my denist if i could avoid that process. He didn't like the idea, so i went to a different dentist who was willing to do as i asked. I don't get x-rays every time either. he just looks at and taps my teeth, and that's that. it takes about 10 or 15 minutes.

so there it is.

you're welcome.

i had lactose intolerance symptoms before i went vegan. then, when i went vegetarian, i was afraid to go back to milk. but i tried raw milk and had no symptoms. today, when i consume pasturized dairy products, i get LI symptoms. when i consume raw, no symptoms.

I checked up on thrush and I definitely do not have that.

Speaking of vegetables, are most veggies bearingly edible by just eating it raw? I am looking for a good vegetable to eat on the go.

I will start eating sliced fruit and a whole wheat bagel (nothing added on to the bagel) for lunch usually now.

I will stop eating tuna and drinking milk (I already have) and will probably check out protein supplements for my protein fix. I need the extra protein definitely on my 2 off days from working out so my muscles get additional protein to build while resting.

I really do not want stop drinking milk though, non fat milk that is, it is such an easy 8g of protein, but I would not know where to get raw non fat milk (unless they sell those in markets uinder another name brand).

I will be flossing at least once everyday now. I will also continue scrubbing my tongue once everyday now.

I will also try to keep my snacks down if any snacks at all to a very extreme limitation. A couple of baked crackers wouldn't hurt to munch down every now and then eh?

I will also be eating more fruitsin general everyday.

Am I on the right track?

P.S - The person who said to stop drinking alot of water....that sounds kind of disturbing to me. I love water and 2 quarts+ is essential to my diet and since when is alot of water bad? Am I missing something here or was that an exaggeration.
