Does Guruji and his school has a teacher's training program one can attend ? If so, how does it work there and how does one get accepted and register ? Thank you.

Dear Cerise: NO. There is NO way you can find this information on this board. For this, you must call the Pune Institute or meet one of the Iyengar Certifying (NOT Certified) teachers. And, talk personally. Neel Kulkarni www.authenticyoga.org

Expert Yogi Posts: 2479 Location: A Blue State | You may look for Iyengar teachers in your own area who offer Iyengar teacher training programs. I have seen these advertised from time to time. So far as doing this in Pune, I have not heard of teacher training done there, at least not below the highest levels of certification; but you should follow Neelji's advice and contact Pune directly for this information.

Expert Yogi Posts: 8442 | Oh no - it is not that long at all. But if you don't go through an accredited certifying organization you probably can't go at all. Our local teachers have about a 2 year wait but often sign up to go again (in a year or so) before they come home. Many of the very senior teachers go annually for extended visits. The average teacher/advanced student goes for a month.

visit bks official website. An international student has to have been doing iyengar method for 8 years and be recomended by a senior certified teacher. I am doing teacher training in my home town Melbourne Australia. To train teachers you need to be a minimum of a Intermediate Junior level 3 cert teacher. Try finding one in your local area. My teacher training program spans over 2 years with an optional 3rd year apprenticeship. I am almost through my first year and looking at sitting my first assessment next year in may. Teacher training is a lengthy committment which is very challenging. The most important aspect is that it has deepened my practice. Yeah and I have heard from teachers in my school that a 2 year wait is the norm for pune, and sometimes there are cancellations and you could be accepted sooner. best of luck

Expert Yogi Posts: 8442 | Good luck Damien - assessment is tough (I just did my Intro I/II) but a great experience. See if you can volunteer as a student at one before you are a candidate. It is very helpful.

Thanks. I volunteered in both the lvl 1 and 2 assessments earlier this year to get a feel for it and have a clearer idea of how things will be done. Right now I need to devote more time to practicing the lvl 1 sequence, I have been sidetracked by more advanced postures so its back to good ol' standing poses for me. More abhyasa and vairagyam for me. Edited by damien 2005-11-14 6:36 PM

Expert Yogi Posts: 8442 | Do you have a specific sequence for the Level I practice? We just work on the whole syllabus and the practice portion is completely unknown before we go in. Also, we are lucky in a way that we do I and II together at least for a few more years. Great to do it all at once - cheaper, too! Also, will you have to travel far? You in Aus. are like us up here in Canada - lots of space between us means lots of travel to bring enough people together at once to do an assessment.

Lvl 1 and 2 used to be done together. One would sit the assessment and be awarded either fail, lvl 1, or lvl 2. For some reason they changed it and have made a lvl 1 sequence and a lvl 2 sequence. So yes they are specific sequences but change slightly from time to time. lvl 1 is not a very difficult sequence as such but as you know there is a big difference between doing a posture and doing it well with the correct alignment and state of mind. Lucky for me assessments are usually held in Melbourne (where I live) or Sydney. I don't want to have to fly to perth though In my teacher training group there are about 17 of us so if most of us sit assessments it is highly likely that it will be held in melbourne.

Expert Yogi Posts: 8442 | Yes, Guruji asked for it to be changed a couple of years ago. We are a little slow in switching just getting the assessors and candidates all in order. It will be a couple more years this way I think. A few do only get their Level I. I can see how you would have a fairly set sequence since it takes 2 hours or so to do everything on the Level I syllabus. I was told that our practice hasn't been changed much in the last little while either but we didn't know that going in.
