Subject: Is Pilates for me?

Hello. Im sorry to ask such an abstract question, but I felt if anyone could help me, you all could.

I'm a 43 year old male, who is an avid bicyclist. I ride in excess of 100 miles/week.

Aside from my superior cardio workout, I'm now looking to take my fitness one step farther.
As an athlete, I'm loooking for ways in which to improve my injury prevention. In doing research on the topic, I keep reading about improving one's core strength, muscle imbalances, and overall flexibility.

Hence, Pilates SEEMS to be a viable option, but I really don't know much about it.

Your thoughts? I really want a program based around stretching and flexibility. If I can also tone and strengthen as well, all the better.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking at buying Lolita San Miguel's "Lolita Shares Her Pilates" DVD to begin with. Looks like a good primer DVD.

Thanks in advance, and best of health to you all,
Lance

Pilates, like yoga, should be done under the guidance of an experienced teacher. Yes, I believe it would make a great addition to a cycling program. Most cyclists need lots of attention to their backs, legs and hip flexors. But I strongly suggest a teacher as opposed to videos

Lance - seriously?

Lance - you have mighty big shoes to fill in the biking department! mr. tourist just got a dvd of the highlights of all the Tours Armstrong won. It is astonishing to look back and see how he just ran away from the rest of the pack. Mr. t also has had the honour of meeting Lance - they did a local triathlon together many years ago when Lance was just a cocky kid

Biking has a tendency to protract the shoulder blades and cause you to round the back. The cause and effect is a weak lower back, tight lats and a tight chest. This all makes for bad posture. Make sure that you have no postural imbalances before practicing pilates. Any imbalance may cause injury to the spine and worsen the imbalance.

Yoga promotes spinal health

As a baby I NEVER crawled. I got up and walked at 7-8 mos. I never developed those upper back muscles as a result. I grew up riding bikes everywhere. I wonder if that is the key to my back problems now.

Mia - I wouldn't be surprised. My biggest concern for kids now is that they spend sooooo much time sitting in little baby bucket seats of one sort or another. I work in an infant/toddler childcare centre and some people are quite surprised that I don't use bouncers, seats or prop babies up to sit. I have had children who were so coddled they could not roll from back to front a 11 months. (Usually 4 - 6 months, for those not inthe baby-know ) and I hear we are getting a child of 22 months who is not yet walking (usually around 12 months). They need to be on the floor doing all those grea salabhasanas and baby up-dogs and cobras to strengthen the back muscles. Then they can grow up big and strong like Lance and Mr. Tourist

I read an article in a yoga magazine once about hypotonic babies. If babies don't crawl for awhile before they walk they never develop those muscles and remain underdeveloped into adulthood. That is where yoga comes in!!

Upward dog is also great for sexy triceps!!! After age 30 estrogen causes women to develop fat deposits on the backs of the upper arms. Keep doing your yoga to combat "matronly upper arm syndrome"!!
