What exercise or exercises are good for back pain? Lower and upper.

Pilates in general is good for strengthening the core, which will help alleviate back pain; however, doing exercise while experiencing pain is not a good idea.  Pilates has truly 'fixed' my back, however, when I first started I listened to my body (and my instructor) and if it hurt, I stopped.  Shoulder or neck pain, put your head down.  Pain in your lower back, put your feet down.

I have recently developed some lower back pain. For me, I can not do a full forward bend (yoga) unless i bend my knees some.

It does depend on where in your back you are feeling pain. Mine is lower back and buttocks and radiates down my leg (my back pain sometimes feels more 'muscular' although i was diagnosed with an inflamed sacrum joint 2 months ago.

Pigeon pose brings me relief.
I have faithfully done an hour of pilates or yoga ever day for the past two weeks and i have to say that my back is feeling alot better!
I have also found that 'holding in my abs' really takes the pressure off my back, esp. in doing pilates. For example, when doing a Swan pose (or cobra in yoga), if i hold in my abs and then lift my chest, I won't feel any pain in my lower back!, but I have to really concentrate on holding in my abs. I think its important to maximize your awareness of the rest of your body also. I have started more strength training because 'everything is connected' and 'everything is supporting something else' - does that make sense?! I mean, don't just work your back. or just work your abs. you have to work everything because if your hamstrings are tight, it could be pulling on your back.
There are some good sites with exercises to try:

http://www.1backpain.com/back_exercises.htm
try doing a google search on back exercises, etc...

Good luck! Hurting is not fun!
