Subject: New food pyramids

Check out this article on new dietary guidelines released by the gov't:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/diet.fitness/04/19/food.pyramid.ap/index.html

DIETARY GUIDELINES
Advice from the government's dietary guidelines, which were released in January and served as the basis for revising the familiar food pyramid:
Eat your veggies: 2 cups of fruit and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables a day.
Daily bread: Eat 3 ounces of whole-grain foods a day.
Got milk?: Drink 3 cups of fat-free or lowfat milk a day.
Just say no: Eat as little trans-fatty acid as possible.
Salt of the earth: Keep sodium to less than 2,300 mg a day, about 1 teaspoon of salt.
Moderation: If you drink alcohol, keep it to one drink a day for women and two for men.
Work out: Exercise at least 30 minutes a day to reduce the risk of chronic disease. Increase it to 60 minutes daily to prevent weight gain and up to 90 minutes daily if you've lost weight and want to keep it off.

Verrry interesting! Thanks for sharing! Sure makes a lot more sense than the old one - I didn't think they'd ever update that thing.

I have a question, maybe you can answer this and maybe not. Why so much milk? Is it the calcium? The vitamin D? Is it the protein? Can you substitute with cheese or some other sort of nutritional source? That just seems odd that they'd use general terms like carbohydrates and trans-fatty acids and then specifically say to drink "milk." Is it the American Dairy Association's clout, do you think?

Also, where is the protein? Is that a typo or something (on their part)? I realize this is just an overview, & I haven't looked at the new specific guidelines yet. I'm sure protein must be in there somewhere! Mustn't it?

I love that they're finally including exercise on this thing!

I'm still sifting thru it. I don't really have much time, but over the next few days I hope to go thru it and I'll try to post some thoughts.

Personally, I can't help thinking that political forces are at play when recommending grains and dairy. America has a lot of money in those industries and they have a huge lobby. But nutritionally speaking, milk is a good source of protein, if you can digest it. I can't. It looks like the grain consumption is more moderate than it has been in the past which is a good thing IMHO. That reduction also puts my power lobby theory into question.

So let's investigate further and come up with some more fodder for this thread.

At least they are finally saying "whole grains" and not just "bread, rice & pasta"! Don't some whole grains involve protein as well? I just had a big bowl (well, ziploc bag) of Kashi GoLean and apparently it's got lots of protein - though most of that may be from soy.

We will definitely have to read their whole report, then discuss! I look forward to a spirited conversation!
