I have been doing yoga for about four years,I also am a power walker and I have recently developed artrites in my right hip it is really hard for me to do some of the yoga poses! does anyone out their know if by continueing to do yoga on a regular bases will it help? I Love yoga but it feels like instead of getting better i feel like a real beginner the type of yoga I do is Power or ashtanga. Just looking for some support!

Arthritis? Yoga should be a big help with that. Do you take classes or use videos?

Continuing your yoga will probably be good for the arthritis. You should
probably work with a teacher a bit on finding which movements or postures
might be better or worse for you. I recommend being very careful with
power yoga (which you mentioned), since the classes can involve a lot
more impact on the joints than other types of yoga.

a) there is no doubt that yoga exercise will help, but you shall need to improve diet and rest probabl in addition.

b) ashtanga and power yoga are not good to start with.

c) yoga exercise which shall help will depend on what you are and the poses you do, so private instruction shall be better than group instruction.

d) Wrong Yoga Exercise which means a Good exercise which is not appropirate for you, or a wrongly instructed and done yoga exercise, can result in worsening the problem than doing any good.

Unfortunately, arthritis is a blanket term that doctors use to describe a LOT of different things that can go wrong in a joint. (I once read that the term "arthritis" actually covers about 100 different conditions.)

Get more details from your doctor, or even better get details from a physical therapist. Once you know EXACTLY what is going on in the joint, you and your yoga teacher can work together to make your practice more effective.

If you are still power walking, you may also want to look into orthodic inserts for your shoes. At the very least, get a PT, licensed athletic trainer, or the local expert at a running store to check your gait. The shoes you wear, especially while walking or running, should be chosen so that they balance out any alignment problems that occur naturally with your gait. (There are shoes specifically made to correct overpronation, and shoes that correct supination.)
