Subject: Pregnancy & Menstruation

As a teacher I get a lot of questions from women on practicing during menstruation or pregnancy. I generally refer them to other teachers that know better. I also say the obvious things like avoid inversions if you are menstruating and avoid deep forward bends and twists if you are pregnant especially as you are starting to show. However, as a guy, I know very little about this area. Can some of the experts out there please give me some good basic guidelines on these women's issues and yoga? Book recommendations, articles and websites are also welcome.

Thank you.

Hey yoga guy - we just had a discussion on this somewhere... The best current book is Patricia Walden and Linda Sparrowe's women's yoga book. Lovely practices and photos of lots of different women. I don't have the exact title but all the booksellers will lead you to it. Of course there is Geeta Iyengar's "A Gem for Women" which is probably the first book to explore these issues. Suza Francina also has a book on menopuse that I haven't yet looked at but since her book for yoga over 50 was good, I suspect this one is, too. There is a beautiful book on pregnancy by Frederick Leboyer (the original low lights, birth without violence doc) with photos of Vanita Iyengar (another one of BKS's daughters) - again, I have looked at it but haven't read it fully. Gorgeous b/w pictures, though.
