Subject: Pilates & My Neck

Hi everyone! I am new to this board and new to Pilates.

I bought a Pilates DVD... "Pilates Beginning Mat Workout" with Ana Caban. It's made by GAIAM. Anyway, I really want to start doing this and I found a place right near my home that offers classes. I have a pretty generic mat right now and I am wondering if I should buy the yoga mat that is thinner and grips the floor. The reason I ask is my neck hurts really bad when I am doing it! I don't have a lot of strength and I am just wondering if there is something I can do to help this; exercises and whatnot. I feel like I can't fully engage my powerhouse when I am spending the entire time thinking about my neck. Any imput would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

jo - go to the class and see what the teacher recommends. Check out the teacher and be sure s/he is well trained and qualified. Pilates, like yoga, is a specialised type of body work and should not really be attempted on your own until you have some sound instruction from a teacher. If your neck is hurting, something is not right - not an area you want to fool around with. Pilates can be a wonderful experience - hope you enjoy yours!
