Does anybody out there know the details of the Advanced Ashtanga Series? There's plenty of published material on the Primary and Secondary Series, but I've never seen a list (let alone a book) of the advanced poses.

You can buy the Pathabi Jois series videos which show them. Neel Kulkarni www.authenticyoga.org

Thanks. Do you know where to buy those videos? Does anyone know of a list of asana names (or better yet, a book)?

Search on www.google.com advanced Pathabi Ashtanga Video etc. I do not know why you are hung up on a particular series? You should know the concepts and form your own series. Neel Kulkarni www.authenticyoga.org

I've always found that I can learn more about yoga by seeing how its masters have organized the asanas. There's an profound logic to the structure of the Ashtanga Primary and Secondary series, and I'd like to see how Jois extended it at the higher levels.

Now I understand what you mean. My best suggestion is either Meet or Write to Pathabi and see whether he can explain some elements of the sequencing to you which he might have developed. This way too much guessing is not needed, though that may be the only option one may find at last. If you are in Viriginia, please see me. Also, if you find the profound logic, please share with us, too. Again, whatever previous profound logic you have, please share with us or email me if possible. Best Luck. neel kulkarni www.authenticyoga.org

Thanks, Neel, for your advice. I will see what I can learn about the Ashtanga Advanced series. Most published material covers only the Primary Series, with the exception of Swenson's book which includes the second series. I have heard of a book by a fellow in Australia that includes all the series, but I have not seen it at this point.

Hey Bay Guy: I met someone who is letting us borrow 4th and 5th series. As I had guessed or learnt, she told me that Mr. Pathabi Jois and his teacher Honorable Krishnamachar, actually found the Ashtanga Yoga (name given by someone, wrongly in my personal opinion, because only Ashtanga Yoga which classicall appears in the Yoga is Patanjali's system of eight limbs. , BUT I do not have objection to this name.) , from the Sanskrit Text written on Leaves and which they were previlged or lucky to find. So, my suggestion of finding the logic will be valid only if you can a) extra sensorily meet the founder of the original sanskrit text. b) next best option is to meet Pathabi Jois, as Krishnamachar is No more in Body. I do not think anyone else is able to provide this sequencing logic to a very great detail and the personal studies to find this logic can take at least 10 years of each day practice. But, I will be very interested in knowing the logic you find. Best Luck. neel kulkarni www.authenticyoga.org

Well, thank you again, Neel. I am afraid that my abilities with extrasensory perception are far to weak for me to encounter the author of the Sanskrit Leaves! And I may not be able to get to India while Pathabi Jois himself is still in body. That leaves me facing 10 years of daily practice, I suppose, before I shall be able to articulate the logic of these series in a way that would bring any credit to their author. And that is only if I can determine what the advanced series actually are.

Well, that is called Karmayoga. Do whatever you can and leave the result to Destiny. But, as soon as I find the advanced series, I shall pass it to you. Until then, Would you like to try: Authentic Yoga, Sun Salutations Level II. This is a video you can get from www.authenticyoga.org

You might want to look at the booklet put together by Matthew Sweeney of the first four series as they were given to him by Pattabhi. There are only a few people in the world doing much above the Second Series. Goodness knows, let alone doing it well! The good news is that Matthew Sweeney answers email if you have questions. He is such a generous guy that he sent me his asana photos on CD for my web site. Not only is this Body Work Posters the only place you can buy this booklet, I can tell you it's also very worth the money. As far as the 5th and 6th Series, I don't know of anyone who is doing them, but an email to the Ashtanga Research Institute or Betty's Ashtanga.com might tell you who is. Christine

Christine --- Thanks so much. I will buy Sweeney's book, and then follow up with the others by email.

Expert Yogi Posts: 2479 Location: A Blue State | Hi Christine, I just received Matthew Sweeney's Ashtanga Book, and it's a great buy. Thank you for the recommendation. I'm already practicing a large part of the Advanced A series, so that looks pretty accessible. The Advanced B series definitely takes things up a level, so...more fun to be had. The photos are clear enough to follow without more instructions, in general, particularly if you own Light on Yoga (although some of the postures are named differently). I am a little puzzled by the Urdhva Kukkutasana's, however. I understand what he's showing with A and C (entering from headstand or by lifting up, respectively), but I'm not sure what's going on with B. Naturally, I am all the more curious as to what might be in the Advanced C and D series.

Wow, that was fast! It's a cool book, isn't it? You'll see many of the photos on my site if you want to see them larger. Matthew was extremely generous on permitting me usage of them, I think. What I would do, if you're really, absolutely curious, is to email Shareth at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute. I think it's AYRI.com, but I'm not certain. Ask him if he is doing it or if any of his students have moved that far. I believe some of the wildly flexibly Russian yogis are using the advanced advanced series, but there are probably only 7-10 in the world doing the whole thing. I might be over stating that number, too. So ... gonna send me some photos? I'm always looking for thing for my site. Christine

Expert Yogi Posts: 2479 Location: A Blue State | Hi Christine -- I really like that book, and I'm already having fun with it. I've done a couple Ashtanga classes during the last few days with a very talented teacher, and the book's been good for helping to fix things in mind. Ashtanga's fairly new to me, so I don't know the sequences well. I did a Mysore style 2nd series practice tonight, which was cool. I think I've seen --- actually, I'm sure I've seen -- some of those Russians on your web site. They are amazing. As far as photos of me, you've got some pretty good photos on your site already. But maybe I can get something to you...if I can get somebody to take a few new pictures of me. Do you ever look at old photos of yourself doing yoga and think: I do that a lot better now (don't I?)!
