If you have a weight problem and you are not athletic, my suggestion is NOT TO try both of these.

Buddy Bruce:
I apologize for incompleteness. What I mean is you need to reduce weight before trying these two style of yoga exercise. What I suggest is:

a) eat more veges and salads and fruits. All these fresh
b) take lot of rest
c) eat other things less, much less to start with.
d) do gentle stretches for prolonged time. That means average 2 hour exercise at a time, but sincerely.

And, do this each single day for 6 months. Keep company of those who do similar things.

hi jess

i think the imporatant question is which type of yoga do you like? have you tried both? if not, try both (with a qualified yoga instructor).

exercise is a really imporatant part of any weight loss plan and these are two branches of yoga that will get your heart pumping and make you sweat.

doing a regular practice will help you to lose weight when combined with a sensible eating plan that limits your daily calorie intake.

a regular yoga practice should motivate you to want to eat better. that is where the diet ends and a new way of looking at your health and your body begins.....

This has got to be the stupidest thing I have ever heard...that you need to lose weight BEFORE you start bikram yoga.

Bikram designed his posture series so that anyone (except for maybe the limbless) could do yoga, at any level.

There are several overweight women in my studio who do just fine.

And my goodness, that is a terrible weight-loss plan you suggested. Nothing but salads and fruit is akin to starving. Where is the protein? where is the fat? you need a moderate amount of healthy fat for any weightloss plan to be successful.

There is also the assumption that being overweight equals being out of shape, when that is not always the case. It is just as certain that a thin person who has never done bikram yoga needs to careful when starting Bikram yoga.

I started doing yoga at 252# and actively in my food addiction- now, while I admit that I wouldn't recommend that route to everyone.. if you are ready to go for it, go for it..try all different styles. I jumped right in with vinyasa and modified as I needed.
no need to put it off... unless you have a medical condition that would prevent you from doing it.
Do explore the Area on this website called yoga for weightloss. There is a lot of info in that board.
