What kind of music do you listen to when you do Yoga? maybe none at all, but i prefer something mellow. I get alot of free cd's because I work at Universal and I recently was given a Mindi Abai CD which works pretty well. It's mostly instrumental jazz so it doesn't distract me. If you want to hear what i mean go to mindiabair.com and yuo can listen to some stuff. Peace

recommendation for music during Yoga -

1. Flute by Haiprasad chaurasia
2. attunements by Harish Johari
3. solo harp by John Kovac
4. Classical alaps by one of my student - avalable only from me.
5. Tambora shruti electonic box, which continuously plays. ask me if you want it from me for almost half of the price.

Best luck with music matching.

I have a CD from Yogafit that is ok. I have used soothing Harp music that I really liked..Flute is good to. One time when practicing by myself I used a Keith Sweat CD and had a great practice!

Yoga music...at the studios around here, we get Dev Primal and Enya,
endlessly. Really endlessly (and I don't like Enya. Not even a little bit.)
Also various "celtic" singers, and so forth. ...soothing, vaguely uplifting
background music.

Kirtan gets played sometimes too, typically Krishna Das and Jai Uttal.
KD is wonderful (I've done several Kirtans with him), but it's also music
to a purpose --- Bhakti Yoga...devotional music aimed at the same transcendence
that one gets through asana practice or meditation --- and so hearing him
as wallpaper music is kind of disspiriting.

I did a Baron Baptiste class this summer which was thoroughly programmed,
from heat adjustments up and down, to the incense and music in the room.
Such posing! I was almost thrown out of the class because I did not have
shorts from Prana or LuluLemon But as the class ended, they started
playing Krishna Das...the track in question was a Sanskrit prayer to Siva...and
it was being used to complete the image, so that one could leave this trendy
class fulfilled. If they'd even read the liner notes, they'd see KD's reference
to "tears in my eyes" as he sings these prayers.

If anyone is interested, I am a musician who has just released a new CD, called "the gate". I have been told that my music is good for yoga, meditiation, and tapping the primal self. I don't mean to make this a "solicitation" of any kind, so I will just say that, if you have an interest in deep sound environments and ancient instrumentation, you may enjoy my work. You can find out more at my web site.

Thanks for listening.

I have found that classical piano music works well. Chopin, Beethoven, Bach, etc. I think it is better if there is no other (or very little) instrumentation. It seems to me that a single instrument (flute, piano, cello, or whatever) works better than an orchestra. Maybe with the orchestra there is simply too much going on for it be soothing background music.

I haven't thought of classical piano for yoga. Maybe the romantic genre, which
has some tendency to be in the background without taking center stage? Imagine,
in contrast, something like Chopin's Revolutionary Etude or the third movement of
Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata!! Those might be great for a vigorous vinyasa practice
of some sort, but I think not so good for Supta Kurmasana or Sirsasana!

Perhaps the "Carl Haas" second movement of Beethoven's Pathetique? Perfect.
Or Keith Jarrett's Koln performance (yes, not quite classical and I'm being a bit dated...).

But Bach? This is an excellent suggestion. The Goldberg Variations to go with
backbends!? Here I'm thinking Glenn Gould, not Keith Jarrett.

If only our local studios would abandon Enya, Enya, Dev Primal, James Taylor, ....

The sheer joy of Glenn Gould's first recording of the Goldberg variations ! Wish I can feel the same when I do backbends...

The best yoga CD I have heard in a while is:

Sanctuary vol.1 (A shanti mix from the Interchill garden)
http://www.interchill.com

It's a nice soft DJ mix that glides from spiritual ambient into soft tribal dub, and back down again. It's way more sublime, and sophisticated than the kind of stuff you'd find at Amazon, etc.

If you are looking for some sound ideas, I have a few yoga music reviews up at: http://yogatones.net

Saturday I went to an Indian Museum. I bought another R. Carolos Nakai CD and I must say this is the best one by far. It is called "Fourth World". The reason I like this CD is because not only does he play the flute, he uses symphonic strings, including the oboe, French Horns, trumpet and ethnic percussion (Satyam liked the Tabla being played in some of the arrangements). This is a very classy, Native American CD...I HIGHLY recommend this one for sure, it is extremely peaceful!!

Boy, I change up my music depending on the style I'm teaching. I like all types, celtic, piano, tibetan sining bowls, techno, light adult alternative, etc....

This website has some wonderful CDs. Every one I've purchased is great plus they let you listen to short MP3s before buying.

Thanks for the suggestion of the Sanctuary CD. I just purchased it on itunes. Maybe I'll bring it in tomorrow's class.
I also purchased the new CD from Soulfood titled Yoga Groove with Brent Lewis. If you like Yoga Rhythm you'll like yoga Groove.

Check em out!!!

- Nancy Kulkarni - my wife's ONLY one CD she produced in 24 years. This is especially good if you understand Indian Classical Music. If you understand, you will be in Heaven, if you do not understand, you shall enjoy the riches on earth. (ha ha ha.. this joke only some will get...

How come I don't have a copy of this NB???

I think I would really like Indian Classical Music. Jagit Singh is another wonderful Indian artist - some say he is Classic Indian, but I'm not quite sure, since I'm not that familiar with what exactly classical Indian means, but I do have a lot of Indian selections that are supposedly classical. It seems to be slightly different from the European and Western Classical I do believe. Satyam and I have several of Jagit's selections. I wanted to see him in concert, he just recently or is coming soon to Atlanta for a concert. I think that would of been really nice.

P.S. About Jagit Singh. His song with Lata Mangeshkar "Tum Paas Aa Rahe Ho" on the Veer Zara Soundtrack is one of my favorite songs. In fact, Veer Zara is one of my favorite Hindi movies and soundtracks. For anyone who doesn't know who Lata is, she is a very famous Bollywood legend. She sings in most of the Bollywood movies..she has a very exceptional voice...absolutely incredible lady. The exceptional part is her age does not match her voice, she's been famous for many years!! I could do yoga asana's to most of the Bollywood sountracks....

i don't listen to music when i practice, but i do love music at other times! as a cellist, any solo cello is at the top of my list.

BG- i also love the goldberg variations- glenn gould is my music hero! the original version is great (and my favorite) but (IMHO) maybe a little too deliberate and frantic for yoga(?) the later version of the aria would be fantastic. beautiful! i may have to go play it after writing this post...

my boyfriend recently bought a Djivan Gasparyan cd. so beautiful! the cd is called "Heavenly Duduk". the duduk is an instrument i'd never heard of before getting this cd. i highly recommend it. you may have heard that instrument in the movie "the Last Temptation of Christ". you can listen to samples at Amazon.com.

enjoy!
