“Many practitioners and teachers loved the anatomical precision of Iyengar yoga, but were tired of getting slapped, bullied and yelled at in class. (Friend) found something to sell to the yoga community that they really wanted, and his timing was good.”

What!!! I never got slapped, bullied or yelled at in any of the Iyengar classes I attended. Whaaaaa! I want my money back!!!

Although I've been bullied and yelled at by the Iyengar elite, I guess I was never a good enough student to be actually slapped! (Or maybe I was just too cheap to travel to India.)

I don't see how "Iyengar" abuse is any different than the abuse that is part of lots of Bikram classes and some of all styles of yoga classes. It is all the abuse of power and proof that the teacher does not have enough wisdom and self control to be teaching. If Mr Friend was sexually abusing students and employees (being a bit too friendly), he was doing the exact same thing. Misuse of power is misuse of power. It is the sign of a weak, self-indulgent person.

What I don't understand is why anyone accepts abuse from anyone, especially when they are paying for it! Are yoga students in general so groveling, hero worshipping and mindlessly authority following that they think abuse is a good thing?

Shouldn't one expect compassion and respect from their yoga teacher?

Bullying, yelling, physical violence and inappropriate sexual behavior don't seem like compassion or respect! They are much too common in the world of yoga because yoga students allow it and even encourage it!

If you are seeking something in your yoga, the only place to find it is in yourself. You do not need to put up with crap in yoga, unless your goal is to move up in a heirarchy of deceit. The thing you seek is inside yourself and cannot be gotten from another, regardless of their fame.

Everyone has some personality trait that irritates his friends or family. Is he too self-centered? Too competitive? Too lazy? Too compliant? Too demanding of others? Don’t go overboard on this. After all, you want your reader to like the character. But he’ll feel more real if he has some flaw. This is usually connected to his unrecognized need (see Ambition) and often gets resolved through his character arch.
