Hi All,
I am 28 year old male recently started Bikrum yoga. I am new to yoga. I had my fourth class today. I find the class really challenging but I feel great after the class. I have read a breathing article online that when you tighten your stomach and body your breath becomes shallow. Most of the postures in the Bikrum yoga sessions require tighning your muscles especially stomach muscles. My question is would this kind of practice hinder the deep breathing.
Thanks
Namastee

During yoga, you need to keep your lower abdomen pulled in and up to support your lower back. You can breathe deeply by expanding your lower ribs with each inhale. Just make sure that you are not lifting your most upper ribs, as they are lifted by contraction of your neck muscles and that tightens your neck and shoulders. Think of your chest cavity as bellows that expand with each inhale and contract with each exhale.

You do not need to extend your lower abdomen to breathe deeply.

But keeping the abdomen pulled in restricts the movement of the back. and the movement of the muscles that need to move for good breathing. This also weakens the muscles. What is good, is to have muscles that dont just contract, but can fully contract and fully expand to their anatomical limits.
