From www.bikramyogawinstonsalem.com:

How many calories does one yoga class burn?*
Jimmy Barkan, one of Bikram's senior teachers who works with professional athletes, estimates that we burn between 350-600 calories per class. The amount of calories burned depends on many factors--your gender, size, weight, body type, and present condition. There are devices available that can help you determine how many calories you burn in an exercise session.

It is estimated that between 350 to 500 calories are burned in a Bikram Yoga class.

Standard figures for this type of exercise rate it between 300 and 500 watts,
which works out to about 400 to 600 Calories per class. It'll depend how hard you
actually work, how big you are, etc, and given all the resting that's done in
a Bikram class, the 600 Calorie figure seems overly optimistic.

When I first started Bikram yoga and for about four years after,I would lose five pounds in one class. Probably most was water, but still. So it does depend. I was very intense when I did class. While in high school playing sports I would burn 7,000 calories in a day. 5 to 6 hours of sports a day. I drove my mom nuts with the food bill. So maybe 600 is too low of a estimate for me. It all depends on so many variables. Many hockey players lose five pounds in one game so this is not all that crazy. I have met one other person in yoga that can burn calories like this and we looked absolutly nuts in class when we first started. Like we were posessed by some insane fire demon. I am a leo with alot of planets and connections into leo. So maybe that it, ya I am a fire demon of the sun that can burn through anything. Watch out don't get burnt.

You can loose a couple of litres of sweat in a Bikram practice very easily. That's four
and a half pounds by itself. I think that if you do the Bikram practice in a cooler room,
say 80 degrees, you'll find that your weight isn't changing nearly as much. You'll also
feel that the practice is not as strenuous as it seems in the heat...that's been my own
experience at any rate.

I've posted calculations on the sweat weight loss in the past (and they were conservative,
too).

BTW, I think that Ashtanga Primary Series burns more calories than Bikram, especially
if you do all the vinyasas.

I agree with Bay Guy- if the Bikram sequence is done in a cooler room, it isn't nearly as strenuous as in the heat. I also think that the Primary Series is way more challenging than Bikram- it gave me a new appreciation for Bikram's series as a beginning yoga class.
