Subject: Bikram on DVD ?

I'm trying to get the "Bikram yoga for pregnancy" on DVD. I have it on VHS, but it's old and no good anymore.

Do somebody in here now where to buy it ?

As far as I know it's only available on VHS.

VHS only listed on the Bikram Website. However, check the web or your local phone book under "Media," many companies will transfer tape to DVD at a reasonable charge.

Suppose that a movie were to be made that had an actor playing Bikram.
Which actor would be best for the job?

Andrew Dice Clay?

So what variations from the routine are included for pregnancy? What about the heat aspect?

Eeek! Some of those made me gasp audibly. A admire the beautiful pregnany ladies and their tummies but I'm not teaching pregnant women backbends and twists no how.

I've watched (in the mirrors behind me) several women doing the pregnancy series.
They all seem to have done fine (I didn't know most of them very well). I have to
agree about the backbends, however, which essentially all of those women skipped
(NONE ever did Urdhva Dhanurasana, that's for sure).

Of course, I sometimes look at these Bikram photos and remember the occasional
community of the place, with familiar faces all sweating and working, and all of us
wearing much less clothing that we'd usually be comfortable with. A beautiful
collection of humanity. Over time, most of the people I knew drifted off, as did
the best teachers, and at times I found myself practicing with a teacher I couldn't
stand in heat that was too high with a bunch of juveniles who only knew that they
were there to get hot and then lie down. Somewhere in there, something was lost,
and my practice outgrew the routine, and eventually I knew that it was time to move on.

I've often wanted to find community through yoga, but my own practice is so entirely
my own that group practice is not something I can enjoy doing every day anymore.

I'm married to a midwife (who also happens to practice Bikram yoga regularly). Many of the worries people have about pregnancy and yoga/excercise/heat/etc. are unfounded. In most cases, pregnant women can do just about anything they used to do before becoming pregnant. Obviously, stretching and compression may need to be lessened somewhat but if a woman's body is already capable of doing a deep back bend then there's no inherent reason why it will be dangerous for her or the infant she's carrying. Now if you're talking about not teaching a back bend to a pregnant woman who's never done one before, I agree wholeheartedly.

Probably the best yogic stuff for pregnancy are poses that help open the
pelvic bones, especially for a first pregnancy. The simplest asana for that
is squatting.

Eric - while I tend to agree that we are overly cautious with pregnant women these days, I would not want to be the teacher in a class with those women, particularly in the *ahem* "Excited States" where they like to sue over hangnails. One of the things that is not taken into consideration in a general way (although they do get fussy in a medical way as in loads of extra testing) is the fact that many women are having their first babies at older ages. What I am seeing now is that the women my age who had their first babies in their thirties are feeling the toll on their bodies much more now that they are in their forties or fifties. Loads more gynecological problems, for one thing. That is just anecdotal but I'll bet the stats will back me up on that in a few years. As for the heat, my guess is that it will not affect those who live in hot places nearly as much as it will affect those in temperate and cold places who are moving from hot to cold a lot.

Cool post. Very thought provoking.

Bikram is quite emphatic in his book that women who to Bikram right up to delivery will have easier deliveries and quicker recoveries.
