Wasn't yoga started by a man? Why is it in our modern times there are more ladies practicing than men?

Judging from some other discussions here, I'd say 'perception' in that yoga would seem to be regarded as 'girly' or 'not strenuous enough' by blokes. It would also seem that perceptions are rapidly overturned in the first class

Al - I think it is a cosmic balancing out of the male and female energies - really! And I am not one of "those" kind of yogis

Last week I took my FBI agent (anti-terrorist department) boyfriend to a Bikram class, his first yoga class ever, and he was totally amazed. The "tough-guy-I-did-trainning-at-Quantico-so-why-do-I-need-to-pay-someone-so-I-can-stretch" mentality was completely humbled in the first 10 minutes. He plans on going back. Wouldn't it be GREAT if "they" (the powers that be) taught various forms of yoga to law enformcement? That's my secret plan to take over the world....evil laugh, evil laugh, evil laugh!!

P.S. The workout made him extremely horny. Now, why don't more guys take up yoga?

Yoga's image isn't macho enough for the average American man. They are either ignorant and believe that yoga is all about chanting, gentle stretching and meditation or they are intimidated by the ideas of flexibility and balance. I think many men are comfortable dealing with strength and wouldn't want to be shown up by a woman in a class.

I think Bikram actually has an opportunity to become an "acceptable" brand of yoga for average men to embrace. The original Iron John yoga!

Of course, us enlightened men are secure enough in our manhood to practice with women who are smarter, stronger, more flexible, and more balanced than ourselves.

I love this question! I am always trying to get my boyfriend to go with me (he is ex-baseballer with knee surgeries) He claims that he would never be able to get through the entire class...too tough

fifi,
I can attest to the horny aspect. Being in a room of scantly clad sweating lead young women is more than enough to get me going. Too bad there isn't a swing yoga class...

I think the majority of men find it too feminine, not macho enough as there's no speed, weight or other measurable challenge.

I second Jackiecat's Ugh....There certainly isn't that kind of vibe in my Bikram class. We are just a bunch of hard working people trying to find some time to connect with OUR OWN bodies and minds. And for the record Bikram (for me) is full of measurable challenges. That is what keeps me going every day.

AFTER the workout, not during. How inappropriately gross!

That's how effective yoga is at stimulating the endocrine system. Good for PMS, hot flashes, night sweats. Benefits seen AFTER the workout/class.
