Subject: Body is a Temple?

Had interesting discussion at my Yoga dive. First of all I do agree with the statement the body is a temple (my body that is for me). Anyway it is very hot we have the windows open (90+ in the room) yoga is over we are picking up our mats and such. My shirt is soaking, so I take off my shirt and a couple of people notice my new tattoo. Cool or tasteless whatever one person privately talked to me in that the tattoo is a bad thing because the body is a temple. She wasn’t basing this on a society norm; she is a very spiritual person who I deeply respect. Talking to her I said a lot my own spirituality is in the tattoo. Well blah blah blah. My question is to the spiritual minded did I defile the temple?

No, I don't think so at all.

I also believe that the body is a temple and I have a couple of tattoos.

For me, the statement is more about what we put into our bodies and how clean we keep our minds.

Incidently, this statement is usually quoted in new age/spiritual circles though actually comes from the Bible.

It's in 1 Cor 6:19.

It is good to be born in a Temple, but it is not good to die in Temple... Swami Vivekananda.

That is a nice quote Neel.

What Swami V. meant was one should go beyond one's auspicious heritage and complete the yoga practice to the end. But, I used it in a slightly humurous way, due to Balen's Cigar. Calling body as temple, and holding cigar. What a fire worship!!!

I think this is open to interpretation. Many temples have decoration on the walls, right?

I was going to type the same thing as tourist did.

I don't really care for tattoos myself, have none, and generally think they're a detraction in my eye. But none of that matters, it's your temple. The art and expression needs to speak only to you.

I'd have to agree, it is your temple and it should be an expression that speaks to you alone. If your not comfortable with yourself as you are, don't decorate yourself for the likings of others, but for yourself and don't do it for your own uncomfortableness for how you are now, that is if you are uncomfortable.

Yeah, I believe so thus we need to take and respect our body as it is the temple of God.
