hello everyone!
Though I am quite oerweight, I had been thinking about trying yoga for a few years now. Yesterday I bought a book about it. It's called Teach Yourself Visually Yoga by the "Read Less-Learn More" company.

I'm 19 years old and I'm 5'10 and 260lbs. I'm not too sure as to what poses are good for me. As far as other exercises, What would coincide well with yoga? I'm looking for something that is low-stress.

I appreciate any advice!!

Ms. Monk,

I am not familiar with the book you mention.
Working with excess weight can be a bit tricky but not impossible.
You may want to get a couple of props. I suggest a block, a strap, and a blanket.

Simple, basic, introductory poses will be fine for you.
You just want to move your body and have a better communication with it, a better relationship.

What other exercise are you considering as combinant with yoga?

Give yourself the opportunity to DO any of the poses in your new book. You do not need to do them aggressively but merely as an exploration of yourself. You can modify any of the poses to suit you. For example if there are lunges you can place two blocks or two phone books under your hands for additional lift and ease.

Try them. Gently. See what you can do. Get back in here and ask specific modifcation questions and we'll try and assist.

When I started Bikram yoga, I was 190 and 5'6", but I was also 57 yrs. old. I found for me,
I had to do something very difficult to feel that I was really doing something. I wanted results
before I became discouraged. it worked, I've lost weight gradually ( about 10 pounds).
I don't have a sense of your general fitness, degree of activity prior to doing yoga. This worked for me. I had been doing jazzercise for 8 years prior to yoga.
I was also motivated by scary medical problems. peggy

Hi, firstly, good on you for deciding to improve your health and wellbeing. In addition to yoga, I'd suggest 2-3 short, intense workouts a week to help burn excess body fat. If you're unfit start with something as simple as walking, but to really make a difference try skipping and/or hill/ stair running... these will really shed the unwanted pounds.

Short, intense workouts are key I believe, as is deep breathing while exercising. Deep breathing oxygenates your system which boosts metabolism and helps burn excess fat. Long, hard workouts and sports weaken your body over time.

Of course diet plays a big part too. Try eating 4-5 small meals a day... this can stop the sort of hunger that leads to overeating. Diet and exercise are such huge areas, I hope these couple of suggestions help point you in the right direction.

All the best,

Matthew
