I've been hearing a lot of negative things about veggie burgers, but I've also been hearing good things as well. Can someone set the record straight? Are they worth the money or should I just stick with Tofu?

what have you heard negative about veggie burgers? There are so many kinds, what you hear about one probably isn't going to apply to all anyway.

Can someone set the record straight? Are they worth the money or should I just stick with Tofu? Make your own veggie burgers. Cook some beans - your choice, smash em up really good, add some onions, diced celery, carrots, bread crumbs, spices...whatever you like, and make little patties. Bake them in the oven for a while...and walla, you have a burger. It's soooo freakin easy!
| |||
not as easy as it is to pop them in the microwave... veggie burgers probably won't kill you, but a lot of them are hardly health food. look at the ingredients, they're all chemicals and preservatives.

Honestly! If you want to be healthy and eat hamburgers, eat grass fed, no hormone, no antibiotic, low fat beef of bison. If you don't want to eat red meat (or any meat), eat your vegetables raw, sauteed, baked etc., but why try to make your vegetables into beef hamburgers? This is really as silly as trying to make hot dogs out of vegetables taste the same by adding all the chemicals and colorings that the meat ones have! (Veggie burgers are usually processed food with the usual additives and the usual lack of nutrition.) If you absolutely must have something similar to hamburgers, why not try falafel, which is chick pea based, natural, healthy and delicious, especially with whole wheat pita bread, humus, tahini and tomatoes.

yeah, why not try falafel?

Extreme Veteran Posts: 574 | At the end of the day everything can be bad for you. The worry about things is worse-leads to stress,anxiety etc. Processed foods generally have less nutritional value and often contain high levels of salts or sugars,so make your own-yum. Im hungry now.Too much water is bad for you, too much mangoes are also bad, too much anything is bad. So just enjoy life and enjoy the simple things in life which are often the most important. Im off to the kitchen now!

Also, look at the sodium content of all of these prepackaged items. It is unreal. I know it is easy to pickup some of these packaged foods because it is so convenient, but if you can cook on the weekends and try to cook in bulk and freeze some for the coming week. This way you can put it in your refrigerator that morning before going to work then warm it up when you come in at night for dinner. Also, check out http://www.horsesfeathers.com it gives you some good suggestions. Edited by Sydney 2010-01-28 12:00 PM

I love your recipe for veggie burgers I think I will make them. I have tried the kind you buy in the store but I bet yours is better. Besides yours doesn't have the sodium content that the prepackaged ones do. Yours would be a lot better for a person. Check out the website at http://www.horsesfeathers.com

Hi, If the veggie burgers you are eating are made with soybeans, it's probably a good idea to stop eating them. While we keep getting told in the media etc. that soybeans are good for us, they are actually the a GMO crop (genetically modified). And, we don't know the effects of GMO on our bodies. So, stay away from soybean veggie burgers and soybeans, soymilk as much as possible. Europe has actually banned GM products, but we haven't yet. Check out Food, Inc. for more info on this.

i know it's an old thread, but i thought i'd give a suggestion--make falafel. falafel is easy to make, and you can make them into patties and either bake or pan fry them in a bit of olive oil. they make good "burgers." also, Alton Brown (chef) has a great Spilt Pea Burger that is *fantastic.* it takes a long time to make, though (45 minutes), but you can make it in bulk and freeze the rest of the patties once you've made them. it makes a lot. I served it at a BBQ and still had left overs! LOL

Expert Yogi Posts: 5098 Location: Somewhere in the Mountains of Western NC | That's what I use ZB...I use Chick peas to make my Falafel. Fava beans can also be used as well. Make sure you spice it up good too, I usually put Cumin and Turmeric in mine. You can basically take any bean, mash it up and add your favorite ingredients to make a veggie burger. I can get really creative sometimes doing this. It's amazing and fun!

Oops, i guess the original poster really made a confusing post. I think the Op is going to say that some kind of veggie may be dangerous for low metabolism people like those who can't digest citric fruits so eating lemon in veggie burgers maybe harm them. acai berry scams & resveratrol
