Hi, I am planning on taking a yoga class and the class I am looking at is Hatha Yoga and it states there is 10 minutes of Shivasana. What is this?

Thanks

Short answer: Quiet relaxation. Both mental and physical.

Shavasana is commonly thought of as Corpse Pose.
The pose is done on the mat in the supine position with the eyes closed.
It's purpose has many folds but generally it closed out the physical practice and allows the nervous system to process that which has preceded it. It is one of the most important poses in the world in which we currently live.

It's also known as Dead Man's Pose. This is the most important posture, usually done at the end of a yoga session. It allows the body to re-balance, re-align itself after stretching and slightly traumatizing the muscles, and center. It is also the most challenging one for most people because it requires you to lie completely still, on your back and with complete awareness. Most people think this is a time to sleep and its really not, although, some of us end up doing just that, which is also okay too, Mostly this asana is about re-balancing.
